Mistakes you've made / Things you need to know about this hobby

Walk fully around a cabinet at an auction and make sure it has a back door.

Go ahead and violate auction rules by opening the back door, coin door, CP to ensure there are actually parts inside the cab before bidding. (Not my problem but saw this happen recently with a tempest at auction.)

1.invest in a good inline cap tester cap kits suck
example
just bought a 20 ez cap kit
replaced all the caps
yes the monitor worked again
got out the tester
found 6 caps that are not included in any cap kit that were dead or failing
several were in the power supply section

2. verfiy test switches are not turned on (i have gotten several games stated as non working fliped off the switch game worked )

3. you can never have to many spare parts

4.old floppy drive cables make great cps2 kick harnesses

5.buy good tools a cheap tool thats only works for 2 times of use is not worth the savings over a good tool that lasts forever

6. use the right tool for the right job and sometimes the wrong tool is the right tool lol

7. home depot is not the place to go for a perfect paint match

8. always wear shoes prefferbaly ones with solid toes when haulng cabs its not worth loosing a toe nail to look cool lol

9. keep in mind there is a reason opreators and retailers brought the games they did to the auction just because it works at the auction does not mean it wil work tommorow or even by the time you get it home they bring the crap they do not want to deal with to the auctions usually

+1

I've always bought Snap-on and Matco tools. I've had the same red tool box since 1989 and all the tools that are in it are about the same age. I have a ratchet screw driver that's got to be 15-18 years old and it works as good as it did the day I bought it.

EDIT: Forgot something.... EFF HARBOR FREIGHT! :)

It's the quality of games not the quantity.

1.) Play in MAME before you buy - it may not be as fun as you THINK you remembered it to be.

2.) There's no point of buying every cheap piece of shit that shows up on Craigslist to impress your friends if the games don't get played.

3.) If the game sits on Craigslist long enough and you buy it - remember it didn't sell the first time so you'll have equally as tough of a time trying to dump it.

Never believe it worked when it was dropped off.

If you cant plug it in , dont buy it unless its extremely cheap.

digital pictures always seem to look better than the actual machine in person.

after you've purchased one game told to be 'solid working 100%' by a op/seller, don't believe that it was just bad luck and the next one you buy will be a nice solid working game...
