Mistakes you've made / Things you need to know about this hobby

Walk away if you are extremely frustrated at something instead of moving on to something else especially if that something else is more delicate and breakable than the part that originally frustrated you.

An interlock switch can be pulled OUT rather than pushed in, and stays permanently locked on. I only learned this after about 2 years of trying and failing to keep an interlock depressed with duct tape on my first game.

My Defender's interlock switch was depressed with duct tape. Apparently the PO never figured out that you can pull them!!!

Don't try to fix a FREE NON-WORKING GAME at the seller's house.

Load that puppy up and check the interlock switches when you get HOME!!!

Driving 6 hours from Detroit to Chicago to pick up an empty, water-damaged Centipede cabinet for $100 so you can restore it is not a wise decision.

I figured that out the other day (thanks tec9) when working on my Mappy. I felt like a dummy, but I guess you learn things as you go.

From now on I will always be very careful when cleaning artwork. I used Windex on the back of a Pac-Mania marquee and took off some of the white paint.

Measure twice, you can only cut once.

Walk fully around a cabinet at an auction and make sure it has a back door.

Even if you get a non working complete game for only $5, cleaning that much raccoon poop out of it makes it not worth it.

When at an auction.. look inside and make sure there is a yoke and chassis..

Couldnt believe how many were that way at the last auction.. but I guess it looks better than an empty hole

+1 and check to make sure it's the correct monitor... Vector monitor in vector game, Nintendo monitor in Nintendo game etc... Even if it doesn't work, you're usually better off with a non-working but correct monitor.

Socializing/making friends is very important. You never know when the guy one town over might have a spare power supply he is willing to give you...

I'm guilty of doing that on my first game's marquee (Defender). Still looked good after I touched it up, but not when backlit, which is why it's now on Oryk Zinyo's wall (I believe).

Be aware of the weight of what your lifting....Transformers are not fun to drop...neither are monitors.

Don't reach for a falling soldering iron..

soldering irons should sometimes have breathalizers attached to them

just be cause you have the room to do it, it is not always a good idea to have too many projects in progress at the same time in differing locations, like one in the house, one in the garage, one in the shop one in the storage unti ... well you get the idea... can never seem to get to all of the once they are started.

Here is a relatively minor thing I learned:

Yes, you can get splinters from arcade cabs. I got one under my fingernail. Man that hurt!
