I bought a 'working' Galaga board off ebay, doesnt do anything when I power it up in a known working cab.

There are empty IC spots at 2H, J & K which I believe should have IC's in them...

Can anyone check for me? The manual shows them as does my busted board.

THANKS!

Yep custom chips appear to be missing

Did you just get this a few days ago? I pointed out to them that those chips were missing, and they replied to me that everything was complete.. Wow.. the listing even says tested working..

Yep, dumbass me I guess!!??? So, my assumption is that those are necessary? I know there are some different versions of the board and I assume all those IC's are required

My other one at least I get what looks like the beginning of self test. White background with multicolored boxes, some flashing.

Funny thing. Seller had two boards. One working, one not. I bought the 'working one'. Now he has a 'working board' for sale...Hmmm

So, I bought it in working condition but 'as is'...He'll probably refund the money but not the shipping...Thoughts?

Your not a dumbass, somebody screwed up on their end. Make them send you the other set if its "working"..or get the refund..Either they got the sets mixed up, or they are trying to pull something..I guess assume positive intent?

Does't matter if it's sold as-is since it was sold as working. File a PayPal claim for "significantly not as described" if the seller doesn't want to make things right.

all fair points. Clearly these IC's are necessary so its not like it could have 'been working' and then had something get jostled loose during shipping...

can anyone just confirm that the IC's missing are indeed necessary? What I mean is, there isnt a hack or swap somewhere else on the board that deems them redundant etc?

Before I battle this guy (he's now saying I went outside of the terms on ebay by putting my own roms on the board) I want to be 100% that those chips are 100% needed for a functioning board.

I recently had a couple of sets, one with some empty sockets and the other with no sockets stuffed in those locations. Common thing on arcade PCBs to see later revs not populating unused sockets to save $.

2H, 2J, and 2L on the CPU board are all Namco custom chips (more specifically, they are bus controllers). I don't see how you could get a board to run without them....

Geez... why don't you pull out the damn schematics, look at them and learn something for once. This is all very well documented on the internets.

They're bus interface chips providing priority and arbitration to let each of the CPUs access the same bank of RAM. With all 3 missing none of the CPUs can access the RAM, so the board can't possibly boot. Replacement 08xx chips are available from many sources, including myself, for ~$20 each.

Not to hijack the thread but I'm looking for a replacement 06xx. Would you know where I could buy one of those Mark?

i honestly love this guy!

i see them on the schema, i have/had no idea what they did. more importantly, i was curious if there was a hack that anyone knew about that rendered them redundant...which is different than cliche, you know, like the grumpy loner that frequents messege boards and only dolls out knowledge with a good helping of venom.

thank you btw!

If someone has a working board running without them it'd be pretty valuable ;)

Pretty sure I still have some 06xx replacements to hand, have to check inventory, $25 shipped. The other alternative is pull one from a Dig Dug, Bosconian or Xevious boardset.

Ok, so this is what I was wondering about...Did the boards you had actually work??? WTF???!

He's talking about empty ROM sockets that are not used. Some boards had sockets loaded, but left empty.......other boards didn't even have sockets installed (since they would have been left empty....saves a little money).

It's been stated, you're missing the 08 custom chips (totally different from a ROM chip). Your board will never work without those chips. You were screwed!
