working on a missile command upright resto and need to know what to do with the sides and front..

i removed the old sideart down to the wood. now do i put on wood hardener, then prime, then paint white?

front looks like a black melamine almost. can i sand that with some 220 then paint black?

The front is probably a Formica type laminate. Unless there are bad scratches or gouges, you can usually clean that up to look new using Novus 2. Thing is, there's usually a heavy layer of funk to clean through, even if it looks clean. Scrubbing Bubbles works good too, but you don't want to get the particle board moist or it will swell.

Looks fun, good luck!

I always us BINS lacquer based primer on these types of cabinets. It will seal very well and gives a great base for other paint.

Do not use this stuff inside however, it is pretty rough on your lungs.

Takes about 30mins to dry 100% and a light sand once dry.

The side's of my missile command are vinyl. Did you use heat to remove them? I ask because I pulled the bonding off one side of a nba jam cab once.

You don't need to paint it do you, to put full side art back on? I am sure it needs to be sealed in some way but like you I wonder with what...

the sides of mine had the original missile command sideart on it, then somebody painted red over top of that. i used a heat gun and putty knife to get it off. in some area's it lifted part of the particle board. in others it didn't. i think i read you are supposed to put down some minwax wood hardener followed buy primer/paint to get a smooth surface and also a surface that the new sideart will adhere to nicely.

good info on the front, i'll try to clean it up and see what it looks like.

So did he spray the poly or roll it? I hadn't even thought about using urethane. Not a bad idea and heck I could use it on the nba jam side too.

Man I hope to get my basket case M/C out of mothballs this weekend. I need to cut all three pieces for the back. They are like his from what I remember. The bottom is broken off the main door is gone and the the top is loose to say the least. Is that 3/4 mdf? I mean what would be the best to replace the back with?

My harness also looks nasty too I hope it cleans up well. Maybe a run in the dish washer would help it. Also from what I understand I should put new edge connectors on the harness as well.

I have already signed up in the control panel thread. I sure hope that happens! Mine is a little warn but I could save it with some paint like dan did when he did his. I would rather have a new finish myself but we will see.

My power supply is a mess but I will skip the powder coat and just use some gold like on the pole positions restores.

Anyway good info...

So who has the best side art?
