Restoring a Missile Command & Centipede.

Water damaged / rotted so cut the bottom of the cabs off, fitted new 19mm chipboard (particle board in the US) at the bottom of each. Car body filler and they are ready for the sideart I have here.

The question is what to use to get the chipboard smooth. I cut a bit of the decal off at the edge to try it but the "gritty" surface showed through even though I'd sanded it smoothly (or so I thought).

I guess it's primer and elbow grease but someone out there knows so please feel free to impart your knowledge this way.

Thanks all....

Use cabinet grade sanded plywood instead when making your repairs. Going back with the same material aside from being correct to the machine, is not desirable in my opinion. A little late in the game for using the cabinet grade plywood for you it seems. I did a Dig Dug this way and I didn't have to sand anything and the side looks smooth. It helps if the graphic isn't too shiny. Aside from that, I've had good look with a long strip of plywood with sanding discs adhered to it. Same as long block sanding for flat surfaces. Basically hard work and sweat are ahead of you lol. Good luck!
