I've discovered a minor bug in the Punch Out FREEPLAY mod chip that has been going around... at least on mine... and I'm looking to see if anyone else has experienced the same thing. It's very minor...

When playing, if you lose then push the KNOCKOUT button for an extra credit to REMATCH, I've noticed that when you lose the 2nd time there's already a "credit" on the system still and you have to go in and play another game but don't "rematch" in order to get it to drop back in to attract mode.

Anyone else notice this little bug?

I noticed that as well. Just put 2 credits in before you start your first match and you will be fine.

OK... it's not just my chipset. It's not a big deal and I'll have to try the two credits at the start of the game method. Thanks Jow.

No worries. That little bug wouldn't be so bad if that freaking attract music wasn't so damn annoying!

I was able to reproduce this defect. I'll look into fixing it.

Bug found, fix implemented and tested in MAME. Will test on my Jammatized boardset this weekend. Looking for a third party tester with EPROM burner and dedicated Punchout! for formal validation.

Has this been verified to work? If so, can someone please shoot me out the updated chips (for a price of course)... this little bug is wearing on me... and Jow's solution to push the knockout button twice at the beginning of the game doesn't work (for me).

Yes...it's minor... but it sucks to walk away from the game after kicking some ass and have to listen to Glass Joe spend what seems like the full 3 minutes kicking the challengers ass...

Wtf?

WTF??? Sounds like you guys keep losing on Punch Out. Don't tell me you need more than one rematch on Glass Joe???

LOL

Merry Christmas Guys!!!

Tested on my PCB but only up to Glass Joe (sorry, pressed for time during the holidays), seems to work. Merry Christmas!

Thanks mjenison... anyone with a burner willing to burn me a set (BTW - will both chips need to be re-burned if one has the old version or just one...and if just one, which one?)?

I will burn you a set and send it out Monday. No charge... Merry Christmas

PM me your address

Just FYI, I think only ROM 8K actually changed from v1 to v2.

Hi,
Was anyone able to confirm that only 8K needed to be reburned? Wanted to make sure before i put an order into hobby roms. I have the orginal v1 pair.

Thanks,
Pat

Has anyone with a dedicated machine and the time and play skills to test it verified that it is working as expected? It's very tricky, from a data perspective, to tell when the game is in game mode vs demo mode vs any of the other prompt screens, so I might have missed a corner case somewhere. But it does appear to fix the bug that was initially reported.
