Mini Outrun Restoration

You really stripped it down for the restore, nice. I had a Turbo Outrun Mini, same cabinet but no steering thumper and different trim on the dashboard.

Seems like your dash is crack free? If so you're way ahead of the game...

Talk to Win Outrun here on VAPS, my control panel was totally cracked and unusable. But they will make custom repos that are beautiful. Here is the photo of the repo they made me.

I received this amazing reproduction of the Outrun cabaret control panel today from VAPS member Wim Outrun all the way from the Netherlands. The quality is fantastic, and the fiberglass construction is stronger than the original yet the same thickness.

Ok! Time to replace the control panel elements. It's pretty gross under there, so everything gets a scrub and a good bit of TLC. I replaced the steering wheel springs with new ones, the gears on mine are ok but I might replace them in the future. The gear shift shaft has two small metal balls with a spring in the middle on the bottom. This "locks" the gear in place so it doesn't drift while playing. The spring was totally broken causing the balls not to create tension, making for a flappy shifter. No one likes a flappy shifter right ladies? After a deep cleaning of everything I have a new robust spring and now the gear shift really locks in High or Low. It feels great.

And here it is all reassembled and looking amazing. Better than new really, since the control panel from Wim Outrun is fiberglass.

I've rebuilt the pedal assembly, and buffed out the break pedal as much as I can. Gave the what I would call pedal backsplash a nice faux powder coat paint job... just need to finish the buffing and slight bending of the gas pedal and gas steam and we are good to go here. The cabinet received it's second round of wet sanding with 1000 grit and even though the photo doesn't do it justice... the sides are feeling and looking great. I'm planning on shooting it again tonight for another round and after one more 1000 grit sanding. I'll reshoot it and go up to 2000 grit of wet sanding.

Not super exciting but the coin door is all ready to be reinstalled ed when the cabinet is ready to go. I cleaned up all the rust I could, it was pretty rough. I also ordered new push buttons and springs since the old ones were cracked and rusted.

Prepping the second side for hot stencil action. Then we get to reassemble the game!
