I've got a Millipede which doesn't boot up. It beeps twice and repeats. The manual says it's rom chip E2. On the grid, that chip is soldered on the board. Is this right? Do I have to unsolder the chip and replace it? The monitor doesn't come up or anything. Thanks in advance for the info.

That's not a ROM, it's a RAM chip. :)

Yes, you'll need to carefully de-solder it, fit a socket and insert a suitable replacement. Make sure you don't break or lift and tracks.

There's a chance that it's NOT the RAM chip, it could be another related problem, but there's only one way to find out.

If you're not an expert in desoldering with all the right tools (vacuum desoldering station), let someone who is do it. Very easy to lift pads and trash the board. Some boards are more sensitive to this than others, depending on the substrate.

When replacing sockets, you can usually pry the plastic off and then remove the pins one by one, which helps prevent overheating and damaging the traces. You could cut the pins on the IC and then remove the pins, but you destory the IC, which might not actually be bad. Good luck!
