Hoping I'm being an idiot, and if so please include a joke at my expense in any and all advice...

Attempting to install a new TKGU-23-50 from mikesarcade.com, and after assembling into the control panel (in order per Nintendo manual) it's loose, with a lot of play.

Am I a dolt?

And yes, I know the satan clip isn't on all the way... :)

Check that part 23-20 is in the right spot. Forgot its exact name. But it's like a spring stopper. If that's not in there right, it will be sloppy.

Yup, unless I'm misreading the diagram she's in there correctly. 23-20 "spring stopper" (oriented per diagram), 23-22 "lever spring", 23-21 "switch collar" (orientated per diagram), followed by 23-23 "E ring 4".

Hmmm, yea looks right from your picture. How sloppy is it exactly?

Nintendo joysticks are not super tight but should always return to center easily.

Does it not even return to center?

No sir, no it does not return to center. I'm familiar with Nintendo joystick feel, although I've never taken one apart nor assembled one until recently (first Nintendo cab).

To articulate this admittedly poorly, I'd say the assembled shaft is too far down and not retained enough.

Also, after looking at your pictures closer, it almost looks like your actuator collar (23-21) is sitting too far down and not even striking solid on the 4-Way plate. I agree, almost seems like the joystick shaft is too long. Thus everything is sitting too low.

Yeah, something is wonky (shaft length? giggity). The pictures on Mike's site, and those joysticks generally, show the shaft just about flush with the switches.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Will drop a note to Mike and see if he might opine here. Thanks for your time!

Hi, We assemble them and test them before shipping. Does anything seem broken?

There is a great video from Chance at The Canadian Arcade that shows how they come apart and go back together and should respond. Let me find that...

Nothing broken that I can see, and to be clear I'm assuming I've done something wrong here :)

Thanks for the video, and save for the TMA-12-15 and other TMA bits yeah, same setup.

I've installed the joystick per the diagram, to the letter, and for the life of me can't ascertain why the shaft is seemingly sitting too far down. There's enough play it wobbles, and you can easily move it 360 (there's no contact with the restrictor plate, as the switch collar is below it.)

For sake of clarity, here's an image of how things are assembled, albeit obviously not actually through the control panel and joystick housing :)

Looks right to me. You are welcome to send it back in if you dont like the feel. Maybe you can take a video of what is not working for you?

The second video looks like it is supposed to work. Here is a video I just made of one installed in one of our new panels.

I missed that video, oops, and thanks for that! Yeah that looks way snappier/tighter than what I have going on. This sucker rattles, spring feels loose.

If you've never dealt with a freshly rebuilt/new Nintendo stick then that could be the issue. It should return to center like it does in Mikes video, but it is not going to feel stiff like the ones with 30 years plus worth of rust/grease do.

Note: I've watched your videos several times over and I don't see anything wrong with it. It looks to be hitting the switches and centering itself.
