Hello all, I Purchased this and 4 other EM games as a lot a week ago.
I am good with EM pinballs but have never messed with this stuff. I am sure it will be a good time. I have wanted an EM shotter for years now but they just dont seem to come along very often compared to video games.
I know I wont have time to restore all of these games and will end up selling a couple of them but for know I am just looking for info, links, pics, and whatever knowledge you all might have here about these, including past and current value.

First is a Midway Sportsman. I dont have a key for the back door to look inside but should be complete. All of the other machines were. What I can see looks good. The gun mount is broken near the trigger and the gun will come off the mount. Anyone know where to find one? Im sure if push comes to shove it could be reattached. backglass and cab are both fair shape but far from perfect.

All input is welcome. Thanks!

Not a bad looking game. I picked mine up "sort of working" and complete for $100 last fall. I need to finish cleaning the contacts, get a couple gears remade, and rebuild the audio. I wouldn't mind finding a better glass as mine is flaking in the upper right but it's not too bad. After you get it opened I'm curious to know if the 8-track is still there?

If you decide to sell or part it out, I would definitely be interested.

I drilled the locks today. As suspected, everything was there including the 8 track tape and player. I unpluged the player for now untill I have a chance to clean it and do something with the tape like transplant it into a new case. I doubt there are replacement tapes anywhere? With the tape player unpluged i powered the game up and to my suprise it was working. Lots of things slow, slugish and sticking but with a good going over and cleaning I think it will be OK. I just hope Burt6666 gets an extra gun mount with his parts he can sell me.

No replacement 8 tracks or even mp3 files for Sportsman. Looks like it uses a custom 8 track as well...

EM Sound Archive

If you ever do find sounds for the game, or get the current 8 track and tape working, I recommend you record them and then try using an flash-based sound card to replace the 8-track. Details of installation and configuration vary with how your game handles sounds (e.g. just background music, event-driven sounds, etc.)

While I have not yet tried it, the following looks promising for that role:

Dream Player

And don't forget, if you start working on the 8-track player, the tape comes out really easily and will go all over the place. Be careful!!

Mark runs the pinballpal website as well as the em sound project. At one time he was willing to copy old tapes onto new ones and make them available to others who have missing or damaged tapes. It might be worth it to contact him - I'm sure he would be really interested in the sportsman 8-track.

It's nice to see another Sportsman coming back to life - good luck!

Thanks, I have allready sent Mark the tape. He is going to repro it.
He even let me send the 8 track player so he could install a new belt and test it
Kudos to Mark and Project EM!
Now if I could just find the gun mount.......

many years ago i sent Mark my Haunted House tape so he could figure what sound went with what track. he sent me 2 repro tapes for letting him borrow the tape. i still have the original 4 track tape (it still works great) that came with the game many moons ago.

A cheap fix for the broken metal part, assuming you have all of the pieces to put it back together, is to pin it. That is drilling a metal hole in each of the broken parts and using a metal pin (or thin metal dowel) and epoxy to hold it together.

You've got to make sure the holes in each part line up and that the hole/dowel are tight fitting, almost pressed on, so that there's no play in it.

I've not used it on anything that large, but it works well on smaller stuff.

I don't know how well it would work long term, but it may make it playable until you can locate a replacement part.

I have one...only prob is at the very back there's a threaded hole and the back part of that hole is broken off.

Sounds like the one you have is better then the one I have now.
I will take a good look at mine tomorrow and see if I think I can use it. I am thinking that if I drill another hole just in front of the broken hole it may work.
I will PM you tomorrow. Thanks!

Thanks Jim, Part of the trigger guard is missing.
At the moment I have the gun on the mount and it is held in place with aircraft safety wire.
Looks like it will stay ok for game play, it's just ugly.
Hopefully I will be able to do something with the one burt has.
