A couple of months back I acquired a Midway Sportsman and am just now finding the time to clean it up and get it working. Once I actually make some progress I'll start a thread in the restore area showing pics and updating that as I go.

At this point I've found my first problem, a gear with plenty of missing teeth on the Diagonal Duck Assembly. Searching around it was suggested that flippers.com might be a place to try to find it. I sent an email and am waiting to hear back but thought I would try here as well - so does anyone have any Midway EM parts? At this point what I'm looking for is Part# 17-42-70 Gear 24P 24T.

I'm also working on troubleshooting the sound - the motor turns and a tape is present (not sure if correct one or if anything is on it) but I'm not sure if the pre-amp is working - anyone know of a quick way to test this? I do hear the gun fireing when the trigger is pulled but not sure if the two audio areas are connected or not.

Also, the backglass has some serious paint loss in the upper right area - I know it's probably a long shot but does anyone have one for sale? Or even just a list of parts someone may have available for this game?

And just to add to a subject brought up in another thread, the recoil works but I'm not sure how weak\strong it should be - right now it feels weaker than an air gun - anyone have a description about what it should "feel" like?

I have one of these also. It is pretty dirty and far down the restoration list atm. I look forward to seeing your machine and what you find. Please post some pics when you get started.

Duane,

You might want to try Gary Southward(Carnival Furniture) in St. Paul for the backglass. He has a ton of old EM stuff and you never know what he might have laying around. Another guy on the forums here asked about a backglass for his bowling game from the 1950's and Gary actually had one and sold it to him. 651-771-7421

I can't help you with the tech stuff as I am still trying to learn about my Captain Kid and currently working on the recoil for the rifle...

I can help as my Midway EM rebuild is fresh in my mind...so ask questions quick as old age and waiting a while will effect the quality of my answers! ;)

Troubleshooting the sound - on my Wild Kindom sounds are generated two ways. There is a 'sound track' via the 8 track player which constantly plays once a game is started and then there are game sounds (rifle sound, hit sound, etc.) generated by the game logic/amplifier board/etc. For the 8 track in my game there is a 4 diode bridge and a capacitor that generates 8.0vdc to kick the tape player on. It is an easy check to make sure this part is working. If you have the correct voltage going to the player.....then the next thing you have to do is rebuild the player itself. First thing to check is the drive belt is not slipping (99% of the time this is the case as they dry out over time)....if not then you will need to rebuild/tune the drive motor. I can help here as well.

The gun recoil feels about like an airgun (Crossman pump type) or a .22 cal. Be careful when working on this feature because it is 110VAC! I don't want you to recoil after being electrocuted harder than your rifle! Just make sure the coil assembly is tightened down....clean the 'knocker rod' with isoprop. alcohol only....lightly (and I mean lightly) lube the sliding portion of the mech. with 3 in 1 oil.

Let me know how it turns out...

Alan

How did this all turn out ?????

I was at Duane's for a party a few months ago. He hadn't gotten around to fixing this game yet. Between his hefty work schedule and fixing up some pinballs for resale, he got really busy. I hope to be playing this game sometime in the near future at his place...

John is correct - I've been pretty slammed with other work to really get back to the Sportsman. It still sits in my game area to remind me to get to it but I've had a few pin projects that have gotten in the way. Not sure about the resale thing as I seem to pick up more then ever leave...

I did manage to get past the gear issue temporarily, now it's down to the switch to let the machine know that the ducks are at the end of their run and to start the next target sequence (if that makes any sense) There is a switch stack that turns on a board that someone had wrecked attempting to adjust that I need to address - I really should get the part number for that and go hunting for it. If I trigger it manually, the game continues just fine and everything else seems to work - other then the background sound but that's another issue.

Hopefully I'll find the time soon and then I'll post some pics - I certainly would like to see some pics of your work Burt666 and am curious what you find as your problem.
