hi from australia. i am new to this forum, and am very glad to have found it !

i have an original midway upright space invaders, one of the very early ones i think with a serial number in the 5,000s. recently i took all the electronics out of the cabinet to clean out the years of crap that had accumulated. when i replaced all the electronics and turned the machine back on the 3amp 12volt fuse blew on the transformer.

could anyone give me some idea of where to start looking? i have been suggested to look at the bezel lights. i assume i need a multimeter to test these.. i also seem to remember the on off switch was abit loose and could possibly be shorting...

i was also wondering if anyone can suggest a decent multimeter to buy as im abit of a noob where multimeters are concerned.

thanks in advance :)

you have wires crossed or plugged in wrong place and its causing a short somewhere.the fuses are just doing their job.

first place you should start is a manual for your cabinet.you want to see what wires/colours are what and where they go and make sure that you have all the wirtes right way round and in the correct place.the manuals are easy to find via google, usualy pdf format and you need to look at the wiring schematics, start at the power line in from the socket,to the transformer assembly,to the power supply board and all the bits after that.

i mean just a shard of metal in the wrong place will cause things to pop and blow so it copuld be many things but,the wiring is best place to start.

Chances are its a capacitor on the daughterboard causing it. Replace the fuse, but before you turn it on, unplug the 2 connectors at the top of the daughterboard, and see if the fuse stops blowing. If so...you'll have to replace a cap, which is under the small heat sink on the upper left corner.

thanks for your help guys. i am confident with a little work (and some valuable advice) i can get her up and running again. just waiting on a new powersupply board.

re multimeters, i hear fluke are the way to go. any ideads which model would suit, as they have soo many. total noob where multimeters are concerned. what do you guys use?

:)

Flukes are prob the best, if i had to buy one all i would look for is at least one that does capacitance on top of the basic volts/ohm functions. Meters are very easy to use..youll learn in no time.
