I was wondering if an original Midway Pac Man joystick could be equipped with another shaft and/or ball-top ?

The reason is that I would love to have a yellow ball-top instead of red. This because I will be intsalling a real Pac joystick on my Bootleg Puckman machine.

I saw picture of the original Japanese Namco Puckman and it had a yellow bal-top, which I think fits very nicely to the yellow fellow on screen :)

For Bally/Midway original equipment, I doubt it, assuming you mean just replacing the ball top or ball+shaft. The top is permanent and I think there is a different shaft style (length, diamager) than any others out there like Wico, Sanwa, Happ, etc..

You could replace the entire mechanism, but the mounting holes are entirely different and you'll ether need to drill new nasty holes in the panel, or get a mounting plate adaptor which run about $15 from Bob Roberts and others. But then you can put whatever stick you want in there.

Its possible some of the early or japanese only puckmans had a different joystick. I have never seen anything but the red ones unless the whole joystick was swapped out. Like mentioned, midway used a unique bolt pattern so its pretty obvious when one has been swapped.

I machined some joysticks w/ pink tops for my Ms Pacman...

did it on a lathe... turned them down and cut the grooves for the clips, etc...

How did you do this, were the balls removable? I am curious how you chucked the stick up to machine the back end of the shaft.
