I am gonna try tackling this thing over the weekend and had a question. I assume these boards are supposed to have connectors at either end for the signal to pass through? Mine is hardwired/ soldered at both ends. I need to replace the chip, but can't remove the board without either removing the entire harness, desoldering all the wires from the header pins or cutting the wires off about 2-3 inches from each side of the board and adding in-line connectors. What would be the best way to do this? It seems several of the pins are tied together as well? What a mess.
 
I assume you are not into putting the right angle .100 headers on the board and pin/housings back onto the harness correct?

If that's the case... do you have enough slack in your harness (if you remove some of the cable mounts that are holding the harness to the cab)?

I would try to get enough slack in the line to get the board out of the cab enough to work on... then cut out that IC from the top... (this will destroy the chip of course).

Then add a little solder to each pin (on top of the board).... and each pin should come out nicely. Then use some wick to clean the holes out.

All this of course if you can get the thing out enough to work on it ;)

I'd put the correct .100 connectors back on there, but I am kinda confused on the pins that are tied together. Were there wire loops? Or are they tied together at the header pads?

Boy I don't remember specifically... I seriously don't think there were any loops on mine. Check the PCB... see if there are pads connected together where the headers should go... maybe someone just got lazy..

EDIT: Actually check out p49 of the parts and operating manual... there are a few pins tied ([2,3] [1,8,10,12]) on the cpu side and (1,4,6,8) on the monitor side.

Here's the pinout/wire colors from my machine....

J1
1= gray
2= rd
3= key
4= gray
5= gn
6= gray
7= bu
8= gray
9= or

All the gray's are ground. They all tie back to the monitor's chassis ground. It doesn't matter which goes to which pin.....1, 4, 6, or 8.

J2
1= yl
2= wh/rd
3= empty
4= br/yl
5= rd/wh
6= key
7= bu/yl
8= gray
9= rd/yl
10= gray
11= rd
12= wh

pins 8, 10, and 12 are all grounds. They tie back to the ground plane of the game board. It doesn't matter which of these three wires goes to 8, 10, 12 (same as above).
