Does anyone want to test this for me?

It's basically just Souzilla's Namco version transposed into the Midway ROMs.

It replaces 3200A (3N the board).

I plugged it into my machine but it started acting a little goofy... but it's Galaga so me looking at the boards might've screwed something up. Plus I was having a little trouble with my EPROM burning laptop when I was programming the chip... so... no telling.

Works 100% in MAME, should work on the board... but you know how that goes.

I'll keep tinkering with my boards to figure out what's going on, but in the meantime if you want to test it, go ahead.

Okay, cleared that up.

The code is good.

I had some EPROMs on my board that shouldn't've been there... It was a hodgepodge of Galaga versions (some Namco EPROMs, some Midway, and some bitrotted). Reburned the ones that were bit rotted and Namco (the 3 on the "back" board are commons so they'll show in RomIdent as Namco, those are fine, but the 6 on the front were different versions of the game... no bueno).

This code works for the Midway Set1 (galagamw in MAME) ROMset... that's what I have, so that's what I tested it for. I'm not sure how/if it'll work with the Set2. ... not sure even how to tell the difference between the two just looking at the chip. ...

But, whatever. There it is.

Cool man :) good job. I have the enhancement kit but this is a great cheap alternative if all you want is freeplay

Yeah, that was the point of the thing. Every other post I saw over the past couple years where people were asking about keeping attract mode in freeplay was just people pointing to the Enhancement Pack. ... if you were just wanting attract mode and didn't care too much about the rest of the stuff then it was $45+shipping instead of a 25cent replacement.

I just tested this out in my Galaga machine, and it works great.

However, the sound plays during attract mode, regardless of the jumper setting. Is this by design, or a bug?

This is a bug. And this is an amazingly late reply... sorry.

As I just moved Souzilla's code over into the Midway ROM sets it's something I didn't expect to come up.

I've been dealing with this on my machine as well. I haven't gone back in to look at the code at all.

If I had to take a guess I'd say that in the Midway version (as I haven't heard of this being an issue in Namco versions) the FP hack is telling the game to keep running the attract mode while also telling the game that it's on the coined up screen. Once it's on the coined screen, it thinks that since it's not in attract mode, it can just go ahead and not bother with reading that dipswitch or acting on it.

Again, this is a bug... and I can't promise I'll get around to looking into fixing it anytime soon.

I'm sorry if this has caused any problems for people. It's only recently come to my attention because I didn't see there was a reply to this thread. I only noticed it myself when I was working on my boards and noticed that I couldn't get the attract mode sounds to turn off.

RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE.....I just found this, burned it and put it into my Midway Galaga. It plays attract mode, but i have no controls once i start a game and enemies get stuck and start spinning in random places, and my ship sprite goes crazy when it gets hit.

Any suggestions? Is there a newer version of this i should try?

UPDATE: Looks like my issue was a corrupt EPROM at 3M....3K looks to be corrupted too haha, but this hack is working now after replacing 3M.

I love being able to reproduce these issues in MAME.

Thanks for the hack!

I just tried this on galaga midway boards with a set of midway labeled eproms (no version noted)

The first 3 dip switches (for the coin settings) need to be set to "on".

It seemed to work as expected. Thanks for sharing this @Scucci :)

I know that this is an old thread but I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed that they can not turn off the attract mode audio with this ROM installed.

The dip package is good as is the LS151 that it connects to.

I noticed this. I'm hoping someone is able to update this mod to correct that.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. lol

I tried the ROM on 3 boards, 2 midway one Namco. They all did the same thing.

Yep. Same here. Quite a while back I contacted the original creator and let them know. They were aware, but I don't think they were interested in working on it further. Sounds like it might be quite involved to fix this.
