Midway Coin Door Logo Plate "Rivet" Thread

How did you widen the hole? Drill bit? If so what size?

I didn't widen the hole. I want it stock if possible. I said you could fit the rivet in there IF the hole was widened.

The heads of the rivet are also a /tiny/ bit bigger than the originals too.

I'm not sure how to measure the hole /accurately/ with the tools I have. I'm not going to eyeball it with a ruler, I need an exact figure.

That sounds more like it. The dimensions I was given were:

Logo plate .020"/.52mm
Coin door .061"/1.42mm
Total thickness .081"/1.94mm
Hole diameter 1/8"(.1250"/3.18mm)

I don't think I'll be able to request samples from this company again. What they sent was the correct size for the dimensions they were given. And they weren't particularly forthcoming with the samples that I finally ended up getting. It's like they don't want business or something.

I know I'm a small fish, but business is business, right?

marcospecialties has a couple different 3/32 brass rivets. One may be close.

The correct way would be a plug gauge and a micrometer. I used some calipers and measured the shaft od on an original rivit which will get you +/- .002
I dont belive this was an off the shelf rivit, probably custom made for midway. I have looked a dozen times and never found an exact replacment.

Rip is on the right track. A part such as a rivet has a given tolerance and generally a large one for such an inexpensive part. Because it expands so drastially upon installation, this should be accounted for in selection. Find the fit tolerance of the rivet from the distributor. Determine a loose slip fit in the plate before installation. lean on the looser side and you can always be assured the rivet will drop in. Just be sure after it is hammered in, it will fit tightly.

Design requirements for hardware will always stand. The head may be bigger depending on the manufacturer, but never smaller in ratio to the shaft. Keep looking, you'll find the right ones.

Bah, I knew I missed a thread....

Marco Specialties actually carries these, intended for pinball stuff.
I used some a couple months back on my Galaga coin door.

3/32" x 7/64"
Part number 07-6688-2 $0.25 each.

Can someone confirm that these are the right one's ? They look too short to me ...

Maybe one of the others:

?

Worked fine for me. With this style rivet, you don't need as much sticking through the other side like you do on a pop-rivet. I put the original logo plate back on this door after I stripped, blasted and re-painted it.

So I am reviving this thread because I tried to save an old Midway coin door plate by masking and painting the most damaged black areas. It still has a few scratches in the bare metal areas, but I think those add character. I also clear coated this entire badge after I masked and painted it to protect the whole thing. I really think these are worth saving:

Now, I tried an experiment with pop rivets, but I don't like the way the back side of the rivet remains tubular. I was using a Surebonder swivel head rivet gun, but it sucked. Can anyone recommend a better rivet gun where both the front and the back of the rivet fold up flat and tight to the surfaces being fastened?

Alright, finally a follow-up to this thread. I was sent some split rivets from Riptor a while back and just finally decided to try them on one of my older Midway badges and one of my freshly powder coated Midway doors. Now this solution isn't perfect, but works. The split pin has a slightly bigger shaft and head, so you do need to widen the existing holes a bit. You can use small #6 washers for a tighter fit on the upper holes, but those washers won't fit into the lower holes due to the structure of the coindoor. To install them is a little barbaric and inexact. I used a large flat blade screwdriver and a hammer to bend them over. Be careful, as it is easy to snap them off if you pound too hard. Here is the result:

I have access to a drill press, so I made up one of these bad boys:

Just picked up the DIY kit, got the smaller arbor press from Harbor Freight, and a 1/8" rivet assortment. It's very useful for precision riveting, especially on plastic pinball stuff that a pop riveter would smash. Have used it on several ramps, a couple plastic sets, etc. and am quite happy with it.

I'd wager that those particular rivets are smaller though so you'd probably have to order another set of dies. And honestly for riveting a piece that large you may need a manual die set. So for Midway badges it might not work. Still it is another option.

Phet's install above looks fantastic, but has anyone found rivets that don't require any drilling?
