Midway 18-Wheeler (1979)

My fear is that game will end up in the trash. I'd buy it but it won't fit through the door to my basement. I'll throw my hat in the ring to help move it if it means I can come over and play it :)

18 wheeler

Hey guys i picked up the 18 wheeler game yesterday. It was getting dangerously close to being thrown out. It is in nice shape - does need board work, but it is complete. If your interested i'll get some pics up. I really will need some help getting this thing trucking again - very little info. available on this beast & although the boardset resembles space invaders - it is different. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

That's a great pick up. Would love to have it myself, but would find the solid state aspect of the game a bit overwhelming. The you tube clip on it is very cool.

Thanks for picking that up, duffer69! I would hate for that to have been thrown out. The ad said the "screen" doesn't light up, I assumed it was an issue with the projector bulb. What is it doing/doing incorrectly?

It seems like the boards would be pretty simple considering that all it really needs to do is emulate a few relays and steppers. Are you sure the boards aren't closer to a pinball machine? I know the early SS pins used boards that basically just duplicated the function of the relays and such.

There is a 2 board "L" style set in this with some damage to a chip with the tin wing style heatsink . This looks exactly like an area on a space invaders sound board that i thought just controlled sound - but it is on the board marked motherboard in this 18 wheeler. If you are in the area please stop by & look this thing over. Marquee lights up, The projector that turns with the wheel lights up, no sounds , wont coin up, & there is a road map disc that should turn that doesnt ( reminds me of the color wheel on my 1959 aluminum x-mas tree) I have the manual & from what i can tell power supply voltages seem right on. There are not a bunch of relays like pinball games had - all logic for the road "movement" & what not seems to be controlled by the game board. If these boards need work where would i send them???

Hi Duffer69,
Glad you were able to save this one. Would you be able to post some pictures of the damage to the board? From the manual I'm guessing it may be the audio amp chip which has blown. Do the displays initialize at all, if so you might be able to run some of the tests listed in the manual to isolate the fault.

Regards Derek

yea i looked at the tests - most are looking for a series of beeps which dont occur. i dont know if thats because the sound portion is damaged or multiple problems . I will get some picks up this weekend.

yes, the displays do initialize but they dont read any of the possible test results. sometimes they are all "8's" sometimes lower case u's sometimes initial u's and then blank.

Nothing new yet. Contacted everyone that advertises board repair services & they are either not able to work on these or 6 months out on getting to these. Everything seems to work - projector, road map wheel, etc. - but it doesnt coin up & wont run the self diagnostics. The sound does not work.
