I'm glad to have found Merit offers options to download the ISOs for new software discs like I found with Raw Thrills for Buck Hunter Pro's because our Coin Op shop has lost a number of discs to our bartops. Now I can go grab ION and FORCE updates for like 2009 and 2010 and reload any corrupted builds, but I may have a bigger problem if the hard drives themselves have an issue.

Does anyone know if the software discs will install on a blank drive of same type and size, or do I have to purchase these drives specifically from Merit/AMI? I certainly could use blank drives on my Buck Hunter Pro's which make them a lot easier to repair until I need a new mobo.

We have valid keys and possibly good hardware....hoping the mobo's are alright...nicotine in the bars just kill them all the time.

I haven't tried it yet but a member here had success putting a Megatouch Maxx on a compact flash drive. That would eliminate the smoke/running hard drive equation.

Yes they can be placed on blank hard drives. The guy to contact is davemanut. Google him and email him. He has his page and sells a lot on eBay. He is the one that knows everything there is to know about Megatouches.

EDIT: I don't think you have to buy the hard drives from AMI/Merit, but I do believe they should be a specific type. When I have bought replacement drives they have always been loaded on hard drives with the brand name Western. Like I said contact davemanut and he can explain everything.

I've got my Megatouch Maxx Ruby 2 running from CompactFlash, though I think the OP is asking whether the new systems (Ion/Force), which have downloadable images from Merit, will load on any hard drive, or whether it requires an original "special" hard drive from Merit.

I don't know the answer for sure, but I see people selling drives on ebay, which look like plain hard drives that have been wiped and re-imaged, so it probably works fine.

You can load the images (ISOs) onto any blank hard drive or flash card (with an IDE adapter). As long as you have the proper security key, it will work. Merit removed the data encryption for the hard drives after the Maxx models. Anything newer (Force and beyond) have no encryption -- which is why they offer the ISOs for Force and newer on their website.

I've got my Force Radion 2011 running off an ultra 600 compact flash card and love it. It was a breeze to install.

Warehouse owner was trying to get me to take a bunch of these machines the other day, I just dont have room for them..
