One of my friends decided I needed some mental exercise, and brought me a pile-o-parts that I think was once a bartop Megatouch XL.

Tinkered with it for a bit, got it from DOA to a booting board (bad ide cable), then got the thing to boot from the eprom by plugging the daughterboard directly into the motherboard (bad isa riser?), and the little round key adapter had some butchered wiring in place of the original connector, so I cleaned/fixed that up and got it to where it now boots until it gets to reading the key...sometimes it reads the key and spits out the number from it, then acts like its about to boot and reboots. After it reboots...it gets the "bad system disk" error until I power it off then back on.

I took the exact same key and adapter off my project Megatouch (this has the proper connector) and tried it with the same results.

Its looking possibly like the daughterboard might be bad (due to it flaking out on reboot), but has anyone seen this? Could it just be a corrupted/bad cd?

I believe its Platnium XL 1.03 and according to Merits site it has the proper key.

Recap the power supply or replace it.

Take the battery off the motherboard, take the CPU out, take the RAM out. Unplug all the boards/cables. Take the security key off the daughterboard.

Put the boards and memory SIMMs in the sink and use as hot of water as you can stand. Clean well with a toothbrush and liquid dish soap. Clean the ISA slots and the memory sockets too...

Pat dry with a lint free towel. Turn the motherboard upside down on the towel to get the water out of the ISA slot. Dry in the oven at 170 degrees. If it's an electric oven then put a cookie sheet between the element and the boards. They'll dry in about 20 to 30 min.

Clean the ISA board edge connectors with a pink pencil eraser. Reassemble system and test.

I had to do that to every Megatouch I've worked on as they get all that tar/nicotine from cigarette smoke all over the boards and connectors. This causes them to be flaky.

If it still complains about the hard drive after that, replace it.

What no 5 horse pressure washer?? LOL it does have that typical Megatouch funk going on. I did remove the ram simms and cleaned those with an eraser, as well as the daughterboard and the riser, but the daughterboard doesn't boot at all with the riser in place. There were 2 caps on the riser I checked and they seem ok...dont see any physical damage either so yeah I'm thinkin just poor connection on the motherboard plug.

The power supply shows clean voltages but the fan has the typical smokers lung going on.
