Any troubleshooting help would be much appreciated.

So my megatouch maxx won't turn on. I'm out of ideas.

Situation:
the monitor powers up along with the DBA. It looks like power isn't getting to the MB (Itox 586 Motherboard with Audio) to start the actual computer - powering on the HD, box fan, etc.
My power supply looks to be good since I was able to short it to get the fan to come on. A try with another PSU to it also did not help.
I've checked all the connections and it looks to be good.
I suspected the Schurter T11-311-2 circuit breaker, but it seems to be in the Closed Position so there is continuity.
The MB capacitors look ok.

I've tried to bypass all the switches by hooking up the PSU to the wall and into the MB, but no luck.

Is my MB simply dead?

haha

so maybe I spoke too soon.

I thought I'd try to run the PSU first and then plug it into the MB. This caused the PSU to turn off. So unplugging things here and there I think I've narrowed the problem down to the HD. Everything runs w/o the HD.

now to test the HD on another computer...

Check for shorts on the HD if the power supply is shut down with it connected.

Simply measure from +12v to ground and from +5v to ground. You may have a shorted capacitor or, if it's an older 10 to 20Mb Quantum IDE drive it may have a shorted motor driver IC. Those were VERY common failure items on those particular drives.

When you short the connector to get the fan to turn on, does it boot the MB? Even if the HD is bad, you'll see the bootup screen and startup sequence before it gives you a boot error due to a bad hard drive...

so far so good

ok guys so my new HD finally came in today and I installed it. Everything seems to be up and running again. For some reason the failed HD made the whole CPU system not work. This is a lesson learned. I've been running it for about 2hrs now. Hopefully it's not something else that's blowing the HD (fingers crossed).

You probably have a shorted tantalum capacitor on the hard drive. Pretty simple to fix, but not simple to track down on a bigger board. At least there aren't that many on a hard drive. ;)

Unless, that's an old 10 to 30Mb Quantum hard drive. Those had a nasty habit of developing a short in the spindle motor and frying the driver chip.
