Ok so your going to need ubuntu or some other version of linux installed on your computer that the spare hard drive and hard drive image are on. You can use a live cd or systemrescuecd on usb stick if you have to.

Right, I'm gonna try and download ubuntu before they slow our internet down, gone to ubuntu.com and not sure which one to download. Any clues please.it says desktop, server or cloud.

Ok, downloaded that for when he comes round, anything else i need to download?

No but once you have ubuntu up and running you will want to open terminal ctrl+alt+T to open terminal. then sudo su (type your user password) to get root (basicly administrator access) then apt-get install update , then apt-get install gddrescue , then you just about ready to restore the image to that spare hard drive.

Technically those apt-get install are minor downloads so you will still need internet access to grab them. But they are small downloads.

Hi, we have installed ubuntu but seem to have problems getting it running so that we can do ctrl alt and t. We can see it as a g drive but nothing seems to be working. Any advise?

You need to install ubuntu as an operating system like windows. Linux doesn't use drive letters.

I suggest looking up tutorial on installing systemrescuecd onto a usb thumb drive and just use that to restore that image to a spare hard drive.

I think you are the guy that was e-mailing me from my website but you stopped returning my emails.

If you want to try a Windows tool, download USB Image Tool: http://www.alexpage.de/usb-image-tool/

You can connect the drive as an external hard drive via USB enclosure, such as this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/400519293559 (just as an example)

Make sure you have "Show non-removable devices" checked in the options tab, and you will be able to read and write to your drive.

Hi, i did reply to your email but heard nothing back. As i have said all along I'm not very good on computers. When i was at school we had two that filled a classroom and only the brainy were allowed in, i had to sweep the playground. I will try to muddle through for a bit trying to sort it with all your suggestions as I don't want to annoy you all on here by asking you questions i know nothing about and getting frightened to death with the replies on what to do. Lol. I have now recruited the wife to push the buttons as i read out the instructions so fingers crossed we may just get the results from all the great info given to me from you very kind peeps......so will keep you updated on how the machine goes....or the divorce. Lol
Thanks again for your help and patience

You really need to find somebody local that knows their way around computers to help you do this. I understand it might seem difficult, but its really easy and pretty much one step and your done.

I was trying to save you the trouble of installing from a disc. You would of had to remove the motherboard just to get to the 2nd ide port to connect a dvd drive because im sure you dont have a centronix cable that merit made operators use to do software upgrades.

Yeah Mahkeymike you are probably right, i will ask around see if i can find someone who knows a bit more about it to have a look. Can you post what is needed to be done to finish the job and when i do find someone he will be able to fly though it please.

well assuming you find someone who knows how to use linux (ubuntu in your case) and has installed gddrescue like i suggested. Its a few simple commands to find out where your spare hard drive is mounted. Once terminal is open:
fdisk -l will list the drives mounted you can tell easily by the size of the drives listed providing they are all different sizes.
Once you know what drive is the drive you want to restore the image onto you would type:

ddrescue -f /home/bigfish6969uk/Desktop/2007.img /dev/sdX 2007.log

this assumes you put the image on the Desktop and bigfish6969uk is the username you used when you installed ubuntu. Its also assumes sdX is where the spare hard drive is mounted. It most likely wont be. It would most likely be sdb or sdc.
