I have a Megatouch Aurora and I have only the basics of linux at my command so maybe someone has done this before and can advise before I have a go at it.
The boot process takes a while because its loading processes for devices it doesn't have, a modem, tournament stuff. Has anyone edited out those parts of the boot script so it boots faster?
I know its hardly worth the effort but I have time on my hands so I wanted to have a lash.

I also need to replace the noisy fans. I can look them up on the mouser/digikey sources, unless there is a vendor on this forum I can support by buying them through them. Or failing that, just a good source for them.

Thanks in advance

What have you done to accomplish this... the call just for the modem itself takes 30 seconds. I suppose it would be less if there was a modem.

Stripped a lot of scripts that load a lot of modules and device checks that are not needed. And patched out a bunch of time consuming functions in the software. Also, what machine do you have? There is different fan sizes/connectors for each model. You need to be more specific to get an answer for that.

exactly. The versions are not that different from a OS perspective. This is 2009.5. Would you mind sharing what you cut and how you cut it? Did you have to do it interactive or can you edit a boot image directly. stuff like that.

Those systems use something called "System V" init.
here's a slideshow I made years ago on system V init this might help you

once you find the scripts you want to disabled
you type
chkconfig --level 5 <whatever> off
for example say you wanted to turn off the service called "sshd (which is not enabled) but just for syntax

chkconfig --level 5 sshd off

installing an SSD drive will also make it boot faster, but certainly chkconfiging these things you don't want will save the most time

I'd be curious on the fan built into the "neck" of the unit as I need mine replaced. Hell I'd replace all of them in one shot to be honest

Maybe there's a better way, but I just measure the old fan dimensions and buy easy to find new ones with the same number of wires and voltage spec (and similar current spec) usually labeled on the fan itself. Since random new fans don't usually have the right connector, I cut the new connector off and splice on the wires from the old fan, straight wind, soldered, shrink tubing covered. Can't always trust the wire colors to be the same though...
