I got one of these today and cannot figure out how to set it for freeplay. The bill validator and coin mech have been removed so it was used freeplay somehow. The manual is no help because it does not designate the dips by number or location. Anyone else that has a MAXX and can help?? Thanks.

On my MAXX Ruby, it was a setting through the menu. IIRC there's a button on motherboard tray to get into setup. That's also where you can enable/disable games and stuff like that.

Where would I find this menu? I have even tried to access it through the screen itself. I guess I have to flick the dips one at a time. PITA

What DogP is trying to say is it should be a SOFTWARE Menu setting, not a physical dipswitch setting.
There is usually a button next to the Calibrate button to bring up the Software Menu.

Open the coin door part, it slides out. There will be a "calibrate" and "setup" button. On some maxx cabinets, there is a second set of those buttons accessed through the back door. Hit the Setup button and go through the menus. Freeplay is on one of those menus, but I don't remeber which one.

EDIT: You may have a lock installed on the lower right side (towards the back) that locks the coin door in place. If not, the coin door will pull straight forward.

If the coin door is supposed to be on the right in the front,it is no longer there it's just a solid plate. There is a small drawer on the left side of the machine towards the front but I cannot get it open. What is that for? What I don't get is that the game was on freeplay before I bought it home and now it's not.

The little door on the left is where a disc drive would have went, probably used to be an XL cab converted to a Maxx. Not sure though if the first couple of Maxx units had a disc before the hard drives but I don't think so.

You need to get the plate off from where the coin door was. In the back are the calibrate and setup buttons. You need to get to the setup button and you will be set. Can you open the back door? Like others stated some do have a button back there too, lots of them don't though. If you can get inside the back you should be able to see how the plate is secured if it isn't obvious from the front, i.e. a lack of screws.

Or, look in the manual for the wires that go to the setup button and jump 'em.

(Oh, if you messed with the dipswitches I guess you do have the back open, duh.)

I found the setup and calibration buttons, when am I supposed to press setup to get the menus? During power up? I can't get it to pull up the menu during attract mode.

I'm pretty sure I pressed mine during attract mode. Did you make sure that the buttons are working/connected. Also, make sure you put the dips back to their old positions... it basically runs on PC hardware, and the dip switches set the CPU speed, voltage, etc.

I don't remember what the guy had them set to before I changed them so I screwed that up.The buttons are connected to a harness that can plug into to ports on the board, but the the harness is not plugged in at all. Pics below. Wife was really looking forward to playing it and I can't get it to coin up. I'm pissed and you know what I really don't get is that I can't even get it to coin up by using the micro switch that the quarter would trigger during coin use.

Now there's a novel idea. ;)

Yes, that needs plugged in in order to even coin it up from the microswitch.
They probably unplugged all of that when they went to yank out the bill validator and such.

Yes I plugged it into each plug one at a time before power up,still nothing.I measured the setup/calibrate buttons with my meter and they are functioning.Could it be that when I messed with the Dips that I disabled the coin mech micro switch and the setup/calibration buttons? I am trying to find out what the factory dip settings are. Also the micro switch for the coin mech was never hooked up to begin with,so I hooked it back up,still nothing and the switch is wired correctly.

Have you checked out the manual: http://www.meritgames.com/Support_Center/manuals/90003010 Maxx TSM_Rev C.pdf ? And if you were adjusting the dips on the I/O board (the card), I think you're okay... I forgot about them, and IIRC they're not important, and maybe not even used. I was thinking you were changing the ones on the motherboard, which could fry your CPU.

I have checked every single manual they have that has the word maxx on it and they all seem to be the same. It basically told me the same thing you guys did, push the setup button. I just don't get why both methods of putting credits on do not work at all,I mean at least one should work. Also the harness coming from the coin mech/setup,calibration buttons, does it plug into U21 or U22? I have tried both sockets already. I have a 2001 model if that helps as I know other boards have a different layout then mine.
