Hey Guys. I just wanted to share my second custom Nintendo scratch build that I have designed and built from the ground up. Last year, I finished my Legend of Zelda arcade concept and had a lot of fun doing it. After it was finished, I decided I wanted to do a series of these custom, "what if they made it?" games.
I quickly started on a Duck Tales Nintendo cabinet...but after talking to a friend and local KLOVer 34K....he suggested that I make a Mega Man cabinet as well. Intrigued, I started to build both at the same time.
Like my Legend of Zelda cabinet, this cabinet was built completely from scratch using 5/8 inch plywood. The speaker grill, 8 bit Mega Man face is hand cut into the plywood...and given depth by varying the surfaces within the face. I then sprayed it with a high build polyester primer, then block sanded it and finished it with 500 grit. The paint is a 3 stage automotive urethane color, electric blue metallic pearl which shifts colors and casts a pretty cool hue change from light to dark depending on the light. I then added a mid coat of .008 blue metallic flake to give the paint a bit more sparkle. I cleared it and then wet sanded 1000-3000 and polished it finishing with a fine automotive glaze.
For the artwork, I recreated all the images in illustrator to clean up most of the low res artwork I found. I came up with a composition I liked, trying to keep it to mostly the original Mega Man artwork. For the side art, I used the Rockman artwork from the original Rockman Famicom game.
All the artwork was hand embossed with sky blue metallic chrome vinyl to give it depth. Yeah, all those circles on the bezel were cut with a steady hand and an exacto knife. Overall, my idea for the cabinet was a monochromatic blue look...much like the Mega Man character....but I may make some slight changes to the cabinet in the future to add some contrast. If I do, Ill post pics.
The intention for this cabinet is to make it a dedicated Mega Man machine...which will play the complete library of NES Mega Man titles...so Mega Man 1-6....which unlike LOZ....is actually a lot of fun to play in an arcade format. And no, the coin mechs dont work....they are for show.
Here are some pics of the finished product, and some of construction. Thanks for looking, and keep an eye out for some other cool custom Nintendo builds I have going on! Sam
