i am working on a Spy Hunter, Tron, and Journey. i have all 3 power pcbs that are trashed from battery acid! and i mean trashed like parts fell out these(resistors, etc..). main power block is even in terrible shape on 2 of them. someone had used foil around the fuses also!

i've been reading threads on the MCR switcher adapters from AS and seems like their are discrepencies whether they do the job correctly or not i guess???

are they good replacements? is there sound issues or not with these?

i have 2 and just wanna make sure before i hack into light power or whatever the switcher uses for power!

thanks in advance

Tried a switcher in Spy Hunter and it hummed like crazy. Went back to a fixed original PS. Other than the hum, it worked fine. Results may vary on the humming.

Have a switcher in Bubbles and it works great, no issues at all.

There are several MCR adapters out there to choose from.

I've also played on a Tron with the switcher adapter, hummed like mad.

I've heard there are some that don't hum... I'd just check around and get one of them. You don't really have to hack into any wires, they're literally just plug into the adapter.

Mine came with a switcher that HUMMMED like mad and I couldn't stand it and replaced it with the AS switcher/adapter that supposedly didn't hum with spy hunter. It was every bit as bad as the other switcher -- totally unacceptable.

I'm back to a linear power supply now and it's very quiet and very nice. No way would I ever go back.

I'd recommend finding a new power brick and new linear power board. I see 'em for sale here and on Ebay from time to time -- they're not THAT hard to find.

that's what i'm tryin to do now, checking around. i figured you guys would be the ones to ask.

you do have to splice into an AC line for your switcher though and don't want to if i don't have to!

have read that the Wizzo that AS sells cures the humming problems also??? this true or is the humming from the big power block anyway?

if someone here could clarify instead of speculation, that would be greatly appreciated!

AS's definitely hum. Spaeth's hummed too. I don't really think there are any that don't hum.

The Wizzo hums too -- that's the one that I and others have tried. It was awful.

Todd at TNTAmusements had linear power boards he was selling a while back, tested and complete with a battery for around $55. You might ping him here.

thanks Demogo!

do you know if the hum was from the low voltage kit/switcher? since power block supplies its power also, could it have been the fuses/big caps doin the hummin?

basically, did you work on each section seperately or shotgun together?

i would rather replace big caps and put in that AS switcher adapter and be done!!!

I don't know that anyone has nailed down with 100% certainty where the hum was coming from.

I believe I kept my power brick stock and just swapped out the switcher for a linear power board and the problem was solved.

I later swapped out the big blues on the power brick but it was afterwards. I'm pretty sure that the big blues aren't the culprit as someone would have noticed this long ago. (This has been discussed for many years!)

ok well thanks for the info!

i always thought that the humming, in almost in all situations, was AC and not from a switcher! i could definitely be wrong though.

thanks again
