Just a quick question to confirm -

In a Tapper, cutting off the lithium-ion battery (just pointed out to me that it's still on there, Thanks MrBill!) I can change the SRAM to a battery backed NVRAM M48Z02, clip the old battery off, and be good to go?

The one down side of the lithium battery upgrade is that you have to change the battery with the power on or you will lose your scores. The battery lasts like 7 years, so it's not much of problem.

Yes you can remove the old battey and install a battery backed RAM. I have this done on all of my MCR games, including Tapper. I think this is the best way to go about saving your scores and settings. If you go with the original setup, (having the battery voltage coming from the power supply) you lose all your scores and settings, if you remove the power supply or the main PCB. The power supply and main PCB must remain connected at all times. This sucks if you need to troubleshoot your machine, or just want to test another power supply or PCB in your game.

Don't forget that someone made a nice Freeplay ROM for this machine!

Cut the battery off, drop in the BRAM, and jumper +5 to VBATT on the power supply board.

The original design was extremely poor, as it requires you to keep the board and power supply plugged into the harness to keep scores. It would have made more sense to put the battery on the game board, but then all MCRs would be acid-eaten like omega race... heh.
