MCR Power Supply:Fix, Repair, Adapt?

Ive always wondered this as well.
My Tron all original has a real bad hum (I suspect its more with the amp)

If not already done.....remove jumper J4 on the power supply board. Midway issued a service bulletin stating to do this to lessen audio hum.

I have a switcher in my TRON (the linear was acid trashed). The funny thing about my setup is this--turn it on, and it hums like crazy.... But as soon as I coin it up, the hum disappears for as long as the machine remains on.

I killed the hum in a similar midway switcher setup (Bosconian) by adding some extra wires to connect the various grounds in the machine. I may try that with the TRON at some point.

What makes me chuckle is people will replace artwork and not think twice about it but when it comes to a power supply... they'd rather keep it original.

Just an observation is all. :D

Repro artwork looks the same as original artwork (in theory). Switching power supplies look nothing like an mcr linear ps. If there was a switching ps board that was the same size as the mcr linear that you could put in the ps pcb holder and didn't stick out like a sore thumb, then you'd probably see a lot fewer people saying "stay original".

MCR power supplies are good power supplies. They're worth rebuilding. And if it's too corroded, it's not hard or expensive to find another mcr ps to replace it (I recently picked up a non working mcr I'm going to rebuild as a backup for all my mcr games).

I can guarantee you that anyone who plays my games wouldn't be able to tell the difference between an MCR and a Switching power supply. (Even with the back door open). :D

I'm still waiting for someone to say that a perfectly working original MCR power supply beats a perfectly working switching power supply hands down as far as reliability, consistency and longevity.

Already been said - It seems, for many, to eliminate the hum problems that they've experience with switchers.

I got a corrosion free MCR p/s board for my Tapper project. I plan to do the shotgun/overhaul and use it. I have the original Midway p/s boards running in my Gorf and Galaga. After all new caps and molex headers, I like em ok.

Alright, I'll bite.

My opinion....it's lateral.....equal. Now, a rebuilt original MCR linear versus the MCR adapter/switcher set up........I'd put money on the rebuilt original lasting longer (but honestly, both SHOULD last a very long time).

 I can relate to this. Except for a few fellow KLOVers who've been to my house, nobody I know would notice or care about the PS being original. They just want the games to work. :D

I don't think you'll get that. Like Edward said, they are probably about equal when all is said and done.

Personally, the more games I have that use the same power supply the better. It makes troubleshooting or quick-fixing very easy. ;)

I wonder if sometimes when people aren't satisfied with a rebuilt original, are they not also replacing any/all connectors, header pins and housing/pins, that are the slightest bit tarnished, or worse - burnt?

I think a lot of people overlook harness side connectors because they don't want to deal with crimping.

Yep. Perfect example is the Satan's Hollow cabaret I'm selling(it's sold... just waiting for it to be picked up). The person before me cut off both 15-pin Molex connectors and hard wired a switcher. While I don't mind the switcher part, I *hate* when people hack wiring harnesses.

Last night I crimped one back correctly and tonight I'll crimp the other. I'm still going to use a switcher but it be correctly installed so an original can be put back in the future without much fuss.

I've been replacing tons of burnt connectors lately... the two pins I picked up last week had soo much "creative wiring" I just stood there and stared for about 5 minutes trying to decipher it.

Sounds like Bob R. thinks they're pretty good.

My take is they put off some heat, but other than that, i personally think it's best to rebuild it and throw it back in. It's clean and doesn't introduce any issues that mods can do sometimes. Every game I've acquired a game that had a switcher in it, the switcher was dead. I've saved them to see if I could repair them, but no luck yet. No obvious faults such as open resistors etc.

That is the question.
So what would you do?

Replace the orginal?
Repair the orginal?
ArcadeShop Adapter?

Anyone use the ArcadeShop MCR PS adapters??
trying to decide if I should replace the PS in my Journey
and proably eventually in all my other MCR games

i repeatedly resurrected my original power supply only to finally throw in the towell.

im now running a heavy duty happ ps and arcadeshop adapter.

I got 6 or 7 mcr switchers in arcade machines now.
I want them back out to be used for quick temp repairs during event shows.

But that won't happen until I build an active power supply load to test out the power supplies before they go back in the arcade machines.

Just another project when and if I get more time to invest in the arcade tech room.
