I just got a matsy chassis from a fellow KLOVer and when I hooked everything up and powered it on, there was static for a brief half second, then SNAP and I saw/smelled smoke. I looked and F002 had blown. I stuck another fuse in there to see where the spark occured and it appeared to be coming from the transistor on the left side of the chassis.

What is this transistor (is it the HOT?) and is it bad or did I hook up something incorrectly?

No idea how you hooked it up... but check to see if the big transistor is shorted to ground. Just put a lead on the cap, then a lead on the chassis. If you get a beep (I always use diode test to check for shorts) then you've gotta replace that bad boy.
