I collect a lot of much older machines (1930s, 1940s, etc) that have a lot of metal parts, and are often quite deeply rusted.
My go-to rust removal method for a long time has been EvapoRust. Love that stuff, it works immensely better than vinegar.
For quite large parts, though, I've had to resort to vinegar, which has always been irritating.
I've seen a lot of electrolysis rust removal videos and decided I'd give it a try.
Electrolysis has the benefits of:
- Large parts can be treated
- Costs almost nothing
- Works quickly
All you need is:
- A bucket or anything the part can fit in
- Washing Soda (not baking soda), I got a lifetime supply from Target for a couple dollars
- Some metal wire to wrap the parts
- Some scrap metal to act as an anode
- A voltage source, I used an old battery charger
