I am going to change the battery so it does not suicide and was wondering how long I have to run the game for the capacitor to charge next to the battery so when I change the battery the cap will hold the memory long enough for me to change the battery.

Thanks!

Well, as good practice, I usually run it for a few minutes, quickly unplug and get to work on the battery. When done I get the board back into the cab asap and start it up. Using this method, I'm 3 for 3. :) what you don't want to do is install the new battery incorrectly. I believe they say you have 45 mins to install the new battery when the old one is pulled. It's kinda like open heart surgery

Good news is that in a worse case scenario and you do suicide the board, there's people on here that can revive it safely now by just reprogramming the cpu...which they say is better than Phoenix ig and burning roms without encryption

I have done over 20 with no issues and I never ran it beforehand. If you feel better you can run it for a few minutes. They say you have 45 minutes but even a beginner can do the work in less than 10 minutes. It's easy, just make sure you put + and - in the correct spot.

battery

Just did 2 boards successful!
Ran them 10 minutes each then changed the batteries then checked them.
All good.
Thanks!

the fun starts when you have to change the battery on a CPS3 cart while its powered up. :)

CPS2 batteries are easy. Just be quick about it and like others have said dont put the battery in backwards.

Test and hold the test button to get the Phoenix menu. ;)

MVC2 is not a CPS2 board, it's NAOMI. No suicide on NAOMI.

If that was a typo and you're still referring to how to tell if MVC is phoenix'ed, just like we said.

However, there are also decrypted roms out there that have no noticeable difference at boot. To be absolutely certain, you would have to pull the 03 rom and verify it against the native (non-phoenix/non-decrypted) game code rom set from MAME, with an EPROM programmer. If it fails against the native set rom, then test it against the phoenix set and the decrypted set.

Decrypted sets can be found here: http://cps2.avalaunch.net/

:edit: to close the line of logic - if the rom verifies against the native code set, and the board runs with that rom inserted, then you are running on battery/encryption/native code. Encrypted code will not run once the battery dies and the encryption key is lost, as you probably know. Phoenix/decrypted code sets all require the replacement of rom 03 (but not necessarily all program roms).
