I was wondering if anyone else has encountered bezel damage like this before.

It's definitely heat damage of some kind but, it covers such a large area. To large to be a cigarette burn. Cigar maybe? Cigar damage would be weird since it came from a elementary or Jr high school... I'll get my mirco-mesh kit out, wet sand it, and see what happens. I'm not expecting miracles here. I'll replace it once I can find a repro or used one.

You're going to have one expensive widebody when you're through...
There are repro'd in the works, get on the signup list.

The cheapest fix: Mother's headlight restoration kit with powerball. It uses sanding pads and a buffer with compound used in a cordless drill. They usually run $25 at Wal Mart and do a pretty good job. If the surface is uneven and deep it may not work well but is a cheaper alternative to a new one and worth a try. I have used it on several ninty CPs, marquees, and bezels and it makes them look like new. I also used it on my truck headlights and it works well!

You're not kidding, hahaha! I guess I'll chalk it up to a learning experience this time around. I did stumble across the thread on the MB repro marquee and bezel the other day. Hoping that works out since, ebay's been pretty dry of MB bezel lately.

Thanks for the suggestion jbk. For $25 it worth giving it a shot. If it ends up being a bust, at least I'll get nice clean headlight out of the deal.
