ok guys, need some input: i picked up a nintendo mario bros conversion cab

since i already have a mario bros widebody cabinet, there's no need for a second (smaller) one, so my idea is to convert this back to popeye. here's what it looks inside right now (a total mess):

the question is: apart from the obvious stuff like marquee, bezel, sideart and control panel, what else do i need / have to do to convert it back?

- do i have to change the wiring?
- can i use the power supply as it is?
- any adjustments i have to do to the monitor?
- anything else i should know?

any help is greatly appreciated, i already have the entire art stuff, but i'm missing a control panel with the popeye control panel harness. whatever you have, bring it on ... ;)

Sending you a message on some parts.

I actually like Mario Bros. a lot more than Popeye but its your machine. Though, I am not sure how good Popeye would look in the orange DK Jr. cabinet. I would love to buy the Mario kit parts off of you but I don't have a Nintendo cabinet at the moment.

maybe consider putting popeye parts in the blue vs cab in the background, and the vs parts in the orange cab

cab in the background = not my cabs!

as i've said above, i already have a WIDEBODY mario bros, so no need for a conversion. as for the orange cab: slap on blue vinyl and i'm good! :)

Popeye has a unique power supply.
or to put it another way, you need a dedicated "Popeye-only" power supply that is only found in Popeye machines.

This is the extent of my knowledge on the subject. Carry on.
I own a rare metal Popeye cocktail, by the way.

Wrong. The Nintendo "Gold Box" PSU he has will power almost every Nintendo game, Popeye included. Also, Popeye cocktails are anything but rare. A Mario Bros. cocktail on the other hand...

;)

A Mario Bros. cocktail would be too hard to play with two players. Its so close quarters that you might accidentally grab the other guy's rod instead of the joystick. EEEEEE. No, thanks.

IIRC, on the power supply thing, one of the supply voltages on Popeye (I don't know which one) has a lower current rating than regular Nintendo supplies. So, back in the day, if you were doing a conversion of a Popeye into another Nintendo game, you were supposed to replace the P.S. Pretty sure I saw this in a Vs. conversion manual.

The Popeye power supply is actually missing a voltage (forgot which) compared to a "regular" ninty supply. So, you can use a Popeye PCB on any Nintendo power supply. You can only use a Popeye power supply on a Popeye PCB.

The other issue is that the Popeye PCB has an edge connector only. The pin header connection locations are there, but usually unpopulated. If you have a parts board, just install the pin headers on the Popeye and your good to go with the harness (if it doesn't have the edge connector).

so basically what you are saying is this: since this was originally a donkey kong jr cab (as someone pointed out), the power supply should be good for a popeye pcb?

what is a "parts board"?

this is what my popeye pcb looks like:

Parts board is a spare board you can take parts off of to fix or in this case change the board you're working on.

thx man, but i can't quite follow you! :(

pin header locations on a popeye pcb? shouldn't the harness in the cab have an edge connector? could you be a little bit more specific please, if possible with pics, i'm not that good when it comes to electronic stuff ...

Look at the upper right corner of the Popeye board in your pic. The solder points are there for the header pins that DK/DKjr used.

thx, i guess i'll have to inspect the harness / cab a little bit closer. unfortunately, it's still in storage, but will be removed from there shortly. so i'd better wait with buying a noew harness / power supply and see what i can do with the exisiting one, right?

I have a popeye board, harness, power supply, I would be willing to trade. Let me know what power supply and harness you have (I'm looking to build a dk jr). Maybe we can work something out.
