So, I'm currently anxiously awaiting my mario cpo to come in the mail. (fingers crossed for today) I recently acquired a decent mario bros in a trade that just needs a little tlc to be a nice game, the cpo is flaking and the bare metal is rusted in spots. Any suggestions on what I need to do to get it ready for the new cpo? Im gonna sand the rust spots, but as far as I know, I shouldnt be painting this thing since the cpo covers the whole thing...

Also, there appears to be some flaking on the front panel of wood, possibly caused by water damage. You can pull a thin layer of wood and paint off. If I pull off the excess and sand it, think that'll take care of it and make it alright for repaint?

When I did mine, I sanded the CP down to the metal and removed all the rust. Then I primed it with some grey spray primer before I applied the new CPO. Turned out pretty well.

I'd paint it. It rusted the first time around for a reason.

I did a thread when I did mine. I'm assuming you're talking about a Widebody MB and not a conversion since you have a metal control panel.

Steps I took:

- Strip parts
- Strip old CPO (with heat gun)
- Sand down control panel to clean bare metal
- Apply spray primer (for use on metal)
- Apply new CPO
- Reassemble

I still need to post a finished picture, but it basically looks like Prairied1ll0's. You definitely need to prime. It's not stainless steel and will rust again over time if any moisture gets in there.

I actually powdercoated my Punchout CP, which is basically the same construction. IMO, you want a smooth glossy surface to adhere the CPO to. Just make sure the paint has fully cured before application.

A couple pics I snapped before cleaning it up....

Also: I dont know why the pic is sideways, I've fixed it and saved it right side up twice to no avail.....

Yep, I did the same thing and it turned out great.
I primed it white to make sure all the colors were bright on the CPO.

Good luck.
