What controls getting the +10 seconds at random times?

I've read that there is something you can do to cause it, though the user did not want to share what did in fact cause it. My buddy and I have started a level with about the same numbers but I usually end up with the wand and he won't. Right before the hammers at the end of the stage on 3 I believe. There must be something you can do to cause it that I usually do unintentionally that my buddy doesn't.

Legit or not, I have never seen the game gone through so quickly, (by computer or human) it just blew my mind.......
