Was curious if anyone here had any Mappy repair experience. I bought a tested, working Mappy but it gives me ram 7 errors after bootup. It shows the little mice on the screen before. According to the manual, it's the chip located at 2D.

I went ahead and took out and cleaned the legs of all chips on the CPU and video pcb's. The chips looked really good and no bent legs and minimal black stuff on a couple. To no avail, I still get the ram 7 error so I can only assume the chip is toast. I'm going to see if Bob Roberts has any, but wanted to check with you guys for any opinions. The board is connected to my galaga setup (no cab) if that might make a difference. Which it shouldn't I don't think.

If their are anymore socketed 9114 RAM chips on the board just swap them around and see if it reports that chip in the new position. If so then the chips bad. Got any other game boards that have the same chip?

Thanks for the reply. All the other chips are different and my Galaga board doesn't have any :(. I can take the chip completely out and still get the same ram error. I'm hoping it's the chip and can't wait to beat the 1.2mil world record, lol.

Just got a reply from Bob Roberts and he has replacements for $3 +$7 for shipping. Looks like I'm gonna have to go that route!

There's six of those RAM on a Galaga video board....3E, 3F, 3H, 3J, 3K, and 3L. Now, they might not be socketed. Do you have a Pac-Man or Ms. Pac-Man.....they use a row of those RAM too, and they're always socketed.

Oh ok. I was looking for chips that said 9114 on em and didn't see any.

*edit*
None of them are socketed, doh. I'll leave 'em intact and just order from bob.

Alright, the chip arrived today. Cost $10 shipped. And now Mappy works! The demo comes up no problem. Now I have a couple questions.

1.) Does the music only start up when the game starts? I only hear jumping and other sound effect noises.
2.) How do I coin it up without a coin mech? lol, I want to play it but can't figure that part out.

Lastly, it was sold to me as tested/working for $65/shipped. It obviously did not arrive that way. Should I complain about having to drop 10 extra bucks on it to get it working?

Not sure if you have music in attract mode or not. Some games will give you the option with a dip switch option.
As for How do I coin it up without a coin mech?
Depends on what you have the game board plugged into.
If it in a cabinet? dose it have a coin door?
If you have a coin door open it up. their should be a micro switch at the bottom where the coin mech should go. It should have a small wire sticking off to the side. This is the coin trip wire, just flip it down for one credit.

Oops, I shoulda mentioned it's not in a cab. Just sittin' on my bench. The only cab I have at the moment is a busted up Stargate. It has coin mechs, though.

Then all the info you need is here

With the pinout just wire up the coin switch and start buttons.
Do you have the 2 way joystick and door button wired up?

Alright, maybe I'm not understanding something.

I ran a wire from the parts side on the pcb attached to line J, credit switch, to the 1-player start button leaf at the bottom. Nothing happens so I'm doing something wrong . I tried to attach it to the ground and the power wire of the leaf switch.

Any ideas what I'm doin wrong?

Never connect power to any control inputs
Control inputs always connect to a ground by way of the switch.
To insert a credit connect pin K which is coin 1 to one side of the pushbutton switch and connect ground to the other side of the switch, I would say logic ground which could be either A,1,Z or 22. Maybe H and 7 also.
To start a one player game pin L to any ground.
If yoou hooked +5 volts or +12 volts to any of the inputs, you may have fried something but I hope not.

Congrats on getting it working. :) You are correct, there isn't music for attract mode...just sound effects like jumping and the microwave doors. It would have been neat for Midway to include the music for attract mode though.

I wonder if I can track down a cab in memphis. I have a lead on a former op from the 80s that I can go check out his storage thanks to my bro-in-law. I gotta save up some cash before I try to go out there. He said he has some converted galagas. I need one of those too. I just hope he's not gonna overcharge me. Considering how dry it is I may have to take a hit.
