OK, experienced Mappy player, I have a question for you.

I just really started playing the game and am trying to learn its ins and outs.

I swear that several times I was able to stun/knock over a cat by hitting a button and running into it. I don't think I was near any doors.

Was I completely misunderstanding something else that was going on? Is there any way this could have been possible?

The only thing I can think of is that you opened a door from a decent space away. You don't have to be on top of doors necessarily to open them. Here's an old game from Ken House where you can see him knock cats down by opening doors from a distance away but on the same platform.

I believe that if you push the button to open a door and the door swings into you and pushes you into a cat, the cat will be knocked down and stunned.

I've gotten out of a sure death this way many times when being followed toward a door and there being cats approaching from the other side of the door.

Ah good call. This sounds like the answer.

Wow, you don't have to be anywhere near the door, do you?

I suspect you are all correct, it was probably door related and I didn't realize it. 500K? Wow!

Nope and that's a huge plus when you are in a bind, are at a point where the enemies can easily outrun you and you are on a platform with a microwave door. You need to be able to open that door to group kill the enemies behind you before they run you down.
