"MAMEing" or otherwise converting a classic cabinet is generally frowned upon here...

Considering that some of us dont have 500+ square foot basements for our game rooms Multi's are the only way that were going to be able to satisfy the need for several games. The Multi-WMS panel isnt ideal for Defender/Stargate but it is playable. All of the other games play just fine on the multi panel.

That line of reasoning could be used to justify converting any dedicated machine into a multigame machine with multigame art and controls. The typical response to that is; people could just as well use a generic cabinet (or build one) for such a project.

This seems to be a philosophical difference between the love of the mechanics of the machine and the enjoyment of the gameplay. I'm all against hacking up a perfectly good machine for the purposes of MAME, but at the same time, I don't know if buying a cabinet kit and then installing old boards into it is any more "authentic", at some level, than MAME.

I own/drive an MGB, and the same philosophical difference exists within those forums: there are some who want to be purists, and others that just love driving the things.

While some of us have the skills to build a cab from scratch some of us dont (I'm in the dont side). I see the point to using a generic cab for a multi but I'd much rather have a nice factory cab thats been converted 10 times over to use as a host to a multi then lets say a generic 19" dynamo.

I've got two in my garage right now. One is a beat to living hell Ms Pac thats going to end up being a multi and the other is a Joust that was converted 3-4 times in its lifetime. Obviously the Joust is going to end up as a Multi.

On the other hand, I agree that gutting a dedicated original cab to make it a multi or MAME is a shame.

I say if you are going to use a existing cabinet, use something like a Capcom 6 button cabinet, you will have pleanty of buttons, and tons of room inside. My Marvel Vs. Capcom cabinet could hold 1 computers inside! Currently it is host my the MVC board, Street Fighter Alpha, and Street Fighter II. I will soon also host a Genesis and a Dreamcast.

I will never understand the people who add tack balls, 30 buttons, steering wheels, guns, etc to one cabinet. If you want to play those games so much, either make multiple cabinets, or multiple control panels. I am not say that is what you do. It is just so chrasy what some of these MAME cabinets end up as. That Pac Man with the rotating controll panel was done quite elgantly though:

How many buttons are you going to put on that Ms. Pac? Please don't make it 2 player.

Mame is good and all, but emulation is emulation to me, just not the real thing.

The Ms Pac will end up a Multi-Vertical either running an Arcadeshop board or BlkDog's custom FE and MAME. It will only be a one player though.

I dont like the hulking 25/27" cabs. I will buy a few for the kids games but thats going to be the extent of it, I probably wont play them. If I can I'd like to have a dedicated Tron and Star Wars back in the game room though. I love those damn games and miss the ones I had to sell...

OK that makes sense, I plan on copying my Galaga Cabinet and using Ms Pac art to make a multi vertical using the 48 in 1. If that goes well I will probally try my hand at a Nintendo cabinet, with the monitor set to rotate. Another project for me is to make a Showcase style cabinet for my 360 (with HD TV) and run all the great fighters on that. (SF4, SF2 HD, Blazblue, King of Fighters, Marvel Vs Capcom 2. I sometimes think a Japanese Taito Egret 2 would be good too. I need to figure out what I really want.
