MAME Controls

this is the first one i converted, and for that reason i will probably never sell it. i think the design wasnt bad but cosmetically it could be better. when i put this thing together i knew almost nothing. the one thing i did do was build several control panels to decide what i wanted for joysticks and button placement. i did nothing but the roughest sketches, and then pretty much set loose with scrap board, ruler, square, pencil, saws, and drill. the first one i designed on cardboard just to get the feel for it and put the buttons on the wrong side! sadly i have seen 48-in-1s on route with the same amateur mistakes i made. my advice is do a sketch of what you want and post it here and byoac and see what advice people have then. other than that, as far as spinners/4 way joystick/trackball/other custom controls are concerned, i say screw it, an 8 way stick and 6 buttons per player works for the vast majority of games. put all those other controls on another cab some other time, then mame a cocktail, etc. one thing at a time, one thing at a time... you dont have to cram every possible control onto your first attempt at a conversion...

At least put some sort of 4-way on your panel. If you have a good 4-way and a couple of 8-ways, the vast majority of titles will actually play well for you. Without the 4-way, or a 4/8way physically restricted switchable stick, you will probably feel a bit hobbled in 4-way titles, and there are quite a few of those.

Just to let everyone know. I got my order in from paradise arcade it is was a great transaction. Shipping was fast and a reasonable price. I got 12 push buttons and the Xin Mo controll interface for. I got the paradise edition so it came with all the color coded wires and it is great. I would compare it with the Ultimarc interface. But it was cheaper which is always better. And it works great with the computer. It just shows as 2 joystick devices and can be configured the same way. Just add your buttons and joy sticks. I got all of that for only $6 shipping. so the total was $48. That is a deal for sure. I am deffinitly satisfied with my order and when it comes time to order the joysticks that i need i will go back to paradise arcade for those. Oh and there was Hawaiian chocolate thrown in too. AWESOME.
