Mame: control pads to arcade joysticks/buttons

Having a difficult time soldering the wires onto the control pad board. I need some hints from the mame experts. The surface is flat so the solder just flakes off. I started to drill holes, and pass the wires thru. However, I am still having a difficult time keeping the solder to stay put. Need some guidance.

Cold solder joints. Properly flowed solder does not flake off. Try heating the board longer. Soldering to a ground plane is more difficult because the ground plane diffuses heat. I would also try using flux paste. If you're new to soldering, try reading this: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-solder/

When the surface you're trying to solder is heated enough, the solder will "flow" onto that surface. There's actually a chemical interaction going on between the solder and where the solder is flowing. When a proper joint has been formed, there will be a bond between the solder and the materials with which you are working.

Can you take some pictures of what you're working with now?

Most controllers I've seen have VERY small solder pads (where you solder stuff) near the buttons, so I'm concerned that you may have drilled the pads out of the board. That isn't the end of the world, but it'll take some mcguyvering to make it work.
