So I am about to make an offer on a machine but would like some help.
I have found a Popeye game and the cabinet is about a 7-8 out of 10. There is no sound but I was told that has to do with the board. Either way...I don't really care as I would be buying this only to convert it to a Donkey Kong. Asking price is $300.....

My contact also has a orange cabinet (nintendo) with white t molding and I think at one time it was a Donkey Kong Jr. The Cabinet is 8 out of 10 and he wants $100 and my contact thinks he has the board and would then want $100....if that is not it then I would have to find here or on ebay.

I also would need to use ebay to buy stickers, and all other parts for the conversion or restoration. SO what do you think of the prices? and also what do you think would be harder to do?

I also will be buying the following....
Mrs Pac Man - Marquee and bezel glass 8/10
Galaga - Marquee and bezel glass 8/10
Pole Position - Marquee 7/10
Captain America - Marquee 8/10
Joust - Control Panel - 6.5/10

Being new to the board, and kinda new to arcade collecting I am just looking for advice on what to pay. THe above parts I am buying to pay for the parts to convert to a DK or restore the DKJ. Any advice is wanted. Thanks.

Just my 2 cents I wouldn't pay 300.00 for a Popeye with the plans of converting it.Be patient and you probably could find a Donkey Kong for somewhere around the same money I paid 300.00 for mine.As far as the sound that is probably the caps on the audio board that is built into the monitor chassis which a main board swap wont fix.My experience was Donkey Kong has a different wiring harness, power supply ect the only part that should be the same is the monitor and the blue cab.The art, board, power supply, wiring, marquee, new cpo. Would cost you several hundred more. I personally like Popeye what about a giving it a try.
On the pole position bezel be careful what you pay most guys around here probably have one if you need it I know I have several pole position 2 cheap any way good luck and welcome
Tony

Popeye is also a horizontal monitor. So it would need to be rotated for the DK. Not that it's hard to do, but the brackets are different. I would think $300 is fair if you wanted to keep it a Popeye & the sound shouldn't be too tough to fix. If you're committed to converting it, I agree with TonyH, $300 + all the conversion parts will prolly cost you more than just getting a done DK.

What i would do is buy the DKJR and make it a DK? As long as it has a Working monitor and cp compete it would'nt take much too make it a DK. Paint it Blue and buy sideart and everything else and your done.

The sound issue could be in the audio PCB (part of the monitor), and usually a cap kit will fix it. I wouldnt pay more than $200 for that Popeye myself. Its not a bad game, but definitely the least popular of the Nintendo games and so it usually has the lowest price. If you are just looking for a nintendo cabinet to build a DK with, I would pick up the Jr. for $100 myself. Orange DK's dont look all that bad, or you could always buy a double DK board and leave the Jr. artwork on there.

Ms. Pac-Man Marquee & Bezel 8/10, Id say around $50, so long as the marquee isnt faded like many Ms. Pac's are. Galaga Marquee & Bezel should be another $50 or so. PP Marquee, not much, maybe $10.

I will agree on buying the Donkey Kong Jr., but I would also consider a Double Donkey Kong board since it may be missing the board, and you already will have the Donkey Kong Jr cab. Then you can decide to restore it back to Jr, or re-paint it to Donkey Kong. Either way, have fun and enjoy the hobby!

the above was to be DOES. The above was done via my iPhone, if you have one you know.
So I think this is what I am going to do....
offer $200 for Popeye....keep it Popeye and play then sell down the road.
Offer $100 on orange cab, it does come with some guts monitor etc. He has a box of maybe a 100 boards non labled, but he does think he know where the JR is, either was I will buy the cab and see whats up on the board if it works do another $100.

I guess where I go with this is if the DKJ board works...if it does then DKJ if not DK.

I will pick up the other parts Joust board, Galaga, Mrs Pac Man parts all in hope of selling to restore this. I will be picking this up in the next week or so. Once I do I will post photos of everything.

Anyone know the color match for Donkey Kong? This Orange cab is is black by the coin slot so it is not solid orange and not sure why it would be black there......hmmm

thanks for all the help.
