Here's a few shots of what the Make Trax looked like when I picked it up. It has an Alpine car speaker crammed into the original speaker location. Not sure why they mounted it from the outside since they had to pull the grill to remove the old speaker and bolt the new one in place.

The last shot is of the car speaker removed from the cab. Believe it or not, it still worked. I didn't know half of it was missing until I started pulling things apart.

I'm not sure what is used for replacing the grill material, but I had a spare defender speaker setup. So I used it for a donor of the grill material and speaker.

First pic is of the original grill after I removed it and the new grill partially in place. The Defender grill is a little larger, so I had to cut it to fit. I used staples to hold it in place because it was very brittle. There's no way it would hold up to trying to bend it into place.

Second pic shows it cut to fit.

Here's the finished project. It looks much better, but I still need to paint the marquee bezel screws. I forgot to get them when I painted the staples.

I need to get a better control panel or get an overlay for this one and try to get the white paint off of the front by the coin door and then it will be as finished as I'm going to get it.

Not bad for a $25 game. Even with the cost of a replacement working board set I still have less than $100 in it.

Is there a speaker in there? Shouldn't be able to see the hole cutout, I don't think. Is that light shining through from the marquee?

I have to make a new one for my Moon Patrol, so I'll be checking out different options...

There is a speaker in there and the replacement part does look better in person. I think the flash is reflecting off of the speaker and wood under the mesh piece. The speaker has faded to a light-grey color over the years and the wood is also a much lighter color than the mesh.

The middle of the mesh that was not covered by the marquee or bezel holder while it was on the Defender is also a shade lighter from fading. So there's a darker strip at the back of it where the plastic piece that used to hold the Defender bezel was located.

You can see the difference under a drop light or the camera flash, but it's unnoticeable when using the regular overhead lights in the room.

You could always paint the board and mesh pieces some sort of semi-flat black and use a newer speaker that still has a dark-colored cone in it, if you were going to put it in a well-lit room.
