Make An Offer?

Hint: you're still bitching.

Dude nobody hates you or has any ill will towards you, you're just making a big deal about nothing. Don't worry about it, man! Chill out a little bit! It's just a hobby. Just move on, it's all good!

Haha, sorry, like someone had mentioned it's hard to gauge someone's tone in a post. From your words, it sounded like you had an issue with me or my intentions. I guess I just get defensive. I just don't want to offend anyone and felt bad for dj dns who felt the need to have to explain himself. I'm moving on! Thanks man! :)

Well, it seems from my experience make an offer means, "will you give me more than im asking".. I myself have made fair offers only to have the seller become angry. If you anger by someones offer, just dont accept offers..just the other day, i made an offer to someone ,for them to tell me that it was a very expensive piece of equipment.. So when i asked what it was used for( to see if he knew). Thats the most quiet he was the whole time.. Didnt even know what it was he had, yet he became angry when i wouldnt offer a price above what it sold for new.. I just dont get it either. So now i wont make an offer untill the seller can say about what they are looking to get for the item. It makes for longer negotiations, but seems no ones mad this way!!!!

I personally hate the Make Offer stuff as it doesn't mesh with my personality well (guess I'll never be a used car salesman). When I sell something (which very seldom happens) I list it at a fair price and that's pretty much what I'll take for it. With the exception of selling my JROK board..I've given away everything I've moved after answering a WTB post

When I see something listed I just assume that's the price(here)...either I buy it at that price or...if it's over my budget...I let it goes and wait for the next something. I think on this forum it's should be collector respect to post your forsale items with a price. IMHO people posting without a price are the profiteers of this hobby and not true collectors. Again..just my opinion.

Now answering a CL add..totally different story...totally different group of people.

I also think you can tell by the 'tone' of the make offer add if the peeps are gold digging or just looking to move parts onto a collector that may need them. There are very few items that truly have a mystery price attached to them..but it does happen.

I would actually love to see a forum rule stating anything for sale must have a price associated with it

I got the "make an offer" crap from a veteran collector and it surprised me. I'm trying to save a somewhat rare old game from certain death, but needed this one group of parts to make it all happen. "Make an offer" to me = what do I WANT to pay, and being a cheap a$$ klover I want everything free. So of course my offer is not what the seller wanted. "Nah, its not worth my time I'll just hang it on my wall" WTF? Really? If you know what you want just ask for it. If I want the part and the price is fair I'll pay. I have no idea what you want when you say make an offer. Let's avoid all the high school bull crap and just throw up a price. Is it really that hard?

Exactly my point.

Yep, I hate it. In fact, a "make offer" too me.....means I am now ignoring it. I don't care how bad I want it or need it, I will never respond to a "make offer".

On the other side of that coin.....if I'm selling something (I always include a price), and I get the KLOV "super" lowball offer.....you will also be ignored.;) If you counter offer me $15.00 for something that's going to cost $12.00 to ship (plus a bit more for Paypal fees).....yes, you will not get a response from me.

If someone says to me, "Make an offer", I say, "Okay, I didn't know this was Ebay, so I'll start my bid at $1." If they get bitchy, I tell them, "If you have a price in mind, then state it. Otherwise, you're just auctioning it off to the highest bidder, and right now that's me. Let me know if you get a better offer."

I find it funny that the same people who hate making offers are also the guys who send lowball offers when a seller actually lists prices for stuff they are selling.

You are damned if you do and damned if you don't around here.

Yeah, exactly. When I post a price on something (which I always do)... usually, people 'make an offer'.

The difference is, I'm a man and can tell them "no". LOL Still not getting why people don't like it. If you don't like the price, don't pay it. Tell them 'no', it's actually something that works really good in all areas of life.

This reminds me of a story I heard from an elderly man I met in the last month or so. He was talking about a woman he met/or saw in his younger days who was working in a factory in Michigan. He said, that she had said something like there's no way she was going to work for 13 dollars an hour. The statement particularly rubbed him the wrong way since he was currently working for minimum wage in my home town which was roughly .90 cents an hour. While I can't verify any of those details personally, I can say that in my hometown, the local commerce groups would not let new factories come into the area if they were going to pay more than x dollars per hour(around 11 IIRC) in my younger days.

My point is that in this country, there is a lot of variation between what people are paid. So an offer of what someone can afford or values an item for in his area isn't meant to be an insult.

I used to be a teacher for a time. Starting salary was right around 30K and I considered myself very lucky. But if I was doing the same job in say GA, I would be making 8K more a year. And if I lived in SF CA, I'd probably have a 100K a year job. Sure, it might cost me 80K a year to live there, but its still a 100k

That's true, I will low ball when people say, "Make an offer" because I need to start somewhere and I certainly don't want to start at the high end. I'd rather have the seller tell me I want $xxx so I can decide and either pass or pay the dough.

Hobbies are all about haggling, it is part of the fun. So if you say "make an offer" be prepared to counter the low ball offers at least. Some of us are serious.

The really sad part is that a rare Bally B&W game is now going to rot in some warehouse because it is easier to hang the needed parts on a wall rather than make a counter offer.

Bah.
