I recently picked up a Major Havoc pcb with the tempest converter to run in my tempest. The board boots up and runs with a good picture but there is no sound and it will not start a game. When the shield button is pressed in attract mode the game resets. It is set to free play but will not start a game and the 1 and two player buttons do not flash.

Anyone have any ideas? The machine runs tempest fine.

Also would love a recommendation on someone who could repair.

Pokeys maybe? I forget if MH has two of them. Try switching their positions if there are two and see if the game behaves differently. If so, you've probably got a dead one. You can steal them from your working Tempest to make sure.

It has a quad pokey eliminator board. I'll see if I can swap some.

Doeas anyone know how to get it in self test mode? I am not experienced at working on these. I got a quote from eldorado to fix it for $170, that seems a little steep but I'm prob gonna do it. i just want to make sure its not a simple fix.

I found this online, sounds like this is your problem :

" If you are using a Major Havoc -> Tempest harness adapter PCB, you will :
need to flip the smaller edge connector in order for a Major Havoc PCB to :
work properly in a Tempest with a Tempest conversion board. You will need :
to cut the cable ties that are between the large and small board connectors :
on the Tempest harness. Once done, the smaller of the two connectors 180 :
degrees and it will work fine. If you do *not* do this, you will have no :
sound. Also, there will be a "P" displayed in Test mode (Bad Pokey). The :
shield button may also reset the game when pressed! Don't worry though, :
you will not damage your board if connected wrong. Just flip the connector :
the proper way. "

Exactly.
Flip the connector.

one more to affirm this. I had the same problem when the smaller connector was upside down.
Fortunately hooking it up the way you did will not cause any damage.

On a side note,
Is this pcb the same exact one that comes in a dedicated major havoc? Or is it a different pcb?

are they interchangeable?

Is that a dedicated or a conversion? Jeebus!

No doubt! it makes me consider selling my conversion board on there, damn!
It looks to be the full conversion kit including the ARII, conversion PCB, harness, and marquee.
