Major Havoc controler on a tempest..

Brentradio posted this pic in the past. Not quite the same thing as your looking for since this is a Space Duel panel without art.... Well, without the right art. ;)

Isn't there some sort of adjustment you'd have to make to allow a roller to work in a Tempest conversion? I think I read somewhere that it would move your character around too slowly and would need some modification to get it correct.

Freebeer on the forums has done it. I have an extra Tempest controller and will do the same...

I believe that hack to to make the tempest spinner work in MH. they are slightly different.

i belive that it has to do with the crystal on the MH board
one crystal for spinner
another crystal for the roller

I have heard that, but I dont believe that is correct. The crystal is different between a dedicated and a conversion, but it has to do with the screen size (IIRC). One for an Amplifone, another for WG6100.

With my MH, if I plug in the tempest spinner, it does not work properly, plug in the MH roller and it works fine. the only differences I can find between the two is the size of the resistor on the opto board. (75 ohms vs 150 ohms).

At least get a trashed tempest CP and strip it -- don't damage your CP w/ the nice MH overlay...

Yea good idea, does anyone make a repro CPO for the tempest CP? this is a project id like to do but it might have to wait a bit before i drop $200+ on the parts i need.

It looks like the roller has some TTL on the opto board so it would probably be a bit slower or too fast depending on the circuit. If I recall correctly Tempest's opto board was just the opto and a few resistors. Although it probably wouldn't be too hard to hack the roller board to make it work in a tempest.

I just installed a roller on my MH Tempest about a week ago. I think it turned out great!

I slapped my control panel on the scanner and then in photoshop placed the 2.5x2.5" (iirc) square with the top edge following the top edge of the hole left by the spinner. Printed it out and lined it up with the control panel art so I could perfectly transfer the pattern to the CPO, then drilled the corners and cut out the square with a saber/jig saw. After filing the edges of the square to make them a little more straight it looked pretty good! I only drilled two additional holes for the roller mounts -- I found that you can re-use the spinner holes and just use some large washers to pin down the top edges of the roller housing. It is extremely tight and solid now and I'm not left with two ugly bare holes where the spinner used to be.

It bothers me a little bit that the area under the spinner knob has a permanent circular wear pattern on it, but I don't think it can be avoided?

As for the crystal thing, I was worried about it as well but the roller seems to work great for me with no modifications. It's nice and responsive.

Anyway, here's a photo:

Any chance I can get the photoshop file?

Hey guys, I'm sorry to say it but I didn't keep the file. I'm not sure why, and it definitely seems stupid to have deleted it now, but for some reason I didn't really consider that it would be helpful to someone else to have and I couldn't imagine ever needing to use it again, so I didn't even save it. Sorry about that!
