I may have been collecting MVS games for years, but it's only been recently that I've run into carts with issues that aren't simply resolved by cleaning the contacts. That being said, consider me a n00b at MVS repair.

I recently picked up a Magical Drop 2 cart. The boards are legit (seen below), but it has a bad sound issue that will be readily obvious watching the video I've embedded below.

When I look at the boards, most everything looks fine. There may be a bit of solder that could stand be reflowed, and there's some gunk on the contacts that I can't seem to remove with the usual alcohol cleaning method (pic 3 below, left side - a little hard to see due to the flash). Other than that, though, nothing looks too bad. Not any worse than any other cart I've ever had, anyway.

Any ideas if reflowing will help or tips on removing the gunk without damaging the contacts? Or maybe just which section of the board(s) to focus on? I know there's a site out there that outlines the parts of each board, but I can't seem to find the link right now.

Higher quality pics here.

I use a pink pencil eraser to clean the contacts.

If something is terribly corroded, etc., then use a Fiberglass Pencil

Check the M1 ROM on the video ROM board and the V ROMs on the program ROM board for cracked solder joints. Also check around the holes in the boards where they sit on the plastic mounts for damage to the traces. It's common to see the traces cut in two by rubbing against the plastic there.

Good call on the fiberglass pen - I need to pick one of those up. I'll check the board/traces tonight and report back. Thanks!

It wasn't JNX, but some of the info is the same (or similar).
Just to be clear, this is the ONLY game that has static?

Sure is. All carts and slots are clean. The only other cart I've had trouble with is a Puzzle Bobble cart that has some minor graphical glitches, though it is fine in my 1-slot.

As a note (which I should have mentioned earlier), the MD2 has not yet been tested in my 1-slot. I need to dig it out again and put it in my Jamma cab to test. I'll do that tonight just to confirm that possibility.

Welp, this one too works fine in my MV-1C. I guess I'll give the slots another good cleaning and check out the motherboard to see if there's anything that stands out at me.
