So.. tried to revive the Hantarex Polo tonight.
Cap kit, flyback and a new HOT.

All went well, it ran ok for a few mins.... then I heard it arcing.
And the pictured item/coil is quite melted....

So what do I need to replace?

Nice burn marks on the board right under that coil in the pic. Monitor was on, when the arcing started the monitor would power down then back up.

Hantarex Polo

bump! for the morning folks.
Any idea what went wrong?
Is this a linearity coil in the back corner behind the flyback (not the width coil, it's further up)? What would cause it to arc?

Did it just burn right around a solder joint? Is it a cold/broken/bad solder joint? There is a fair amount of stress on the horizontal components, and a cold solder joint, cracked trace or other bad connection will lead to arcing and burning. I've seen several cases of large burned marks on boards from something as simple as a cold solder joint.

Clean up the area, check for bad connections, and fix any you find.

Better pics of the burnt areas/components...

Do I have the cap in the correct direction?

First you need to figure out why it happened..otherwise when you intall replacements you'll just fry those.

Every black mark on a board doesn't necessarily mean the associated component is bad. Remember, things like large power resistors give off a lot of heat - over time this will blacken and cook the board.

Carefully inspect the burn marks on the bottom of the board - are they centered around cold/cracked solder joints? Sometimes this can cause arcing, especially in the horizontal circuits.

the ones on the bottom of the board are definately new burns, cleaning it up and resoldering then we'll see what happens
