Hey all!

Question for my fellow collectors:

Does anyone out there know if the plastic joystick handles for Mad Planets would be the same as those for Tron/Satan's Hallow/Gorf (other than the color)?

I'll be doing some visual comparisons at CAX this weekend as I'm hoping to have these repro'd, and if they are the same, it would actually be pretty easy to do so if other folks would be interested (since the molds now exist for the former).

ummm

So what do you think besides color is different? I have had satan's hollow, tron, mad planets and xenophobe and all were the same except color/insert.

?

show the difference.

So let's see some images of the differences? Remember - they only asked about the plastic handle covers - not the lights, shaft bend/straight, insert, etc.

I'll get pics of my stuff later.

Yep...I am referring to the plastic handle portion only.

So in other words, would the same plastic portion work for a Mad Planets upright if these were to made in black rather than Tron blue (using the original shaft, buttons, wiring, etc.)?

Jon

M3 and MP joysticks were made by Wico.
AS long as you have those plastic grips to make molds, you can do any color.

You cannot use the Wico grips on Bally games and vice versa

Not sure of that is the answer you are looking for

standard Bally black grips are still produced by HAPP. No need to reinvent the wheel.

Now if you want to produce the Wico grips, that is probably a good thing.

dang

They are right. Found several pics on web of Mad Planets and it's a little different. Mine must have had a stick taken from another game...

Thanks for the information Mylstar.

So there is no way the Bally plastics will work on MP, huh? If true, that's a shame...I guess I should have known it wouldn't be that easy...

Back to the proverbial drawing board on this one I guess...

it's not a plug n play solution.
I'm sure you could get a drimmel tool and start cutting/modifying a Bally grip.

Plus the trigger button on MP and Mach is rectangular and pushes in with a spring, bally/midway triangular and rotates in. MP sticks are almost impossible to take apart without breaking the inner plastic clips that secure the shell in two places. Look at pictures of a shell disassembled before you attempt.

I agree, that clip is a terrible design.
There are also two different shaft/shell combinations. One with screws on the side of the shaft/shell and one without.

I dont recall off the top of my head but one style has the clips that hold it together and another has a screw or two instead of the clips. For reasons mentioned the screw design was much better since the clips tend to break off.

Since were looking at reproing the Controllers, was the spinner a custom design or was it used in some other machine. Anyone know if a Tron or Tempest controller was the same.

Another item needed...

...for these joysticks is a new rubber centering grommet. The one used on Mad Planets and Mach 3 is substantially larger in size than the other ones used on the Tron and other joysticks. The one on my Mad Planets is worn where the pin centers the joystick handle, and my handle has just a LITTLE clockwise rotation "slop" to it while moving it around. Quite annoying. I have kept an eye out for a replacement, but with no luck...

Enlarge the hole in the stick and use an oversize roll pin. This pin is what keeps it from rotating.
