Mad Planets Flyer - Blown Up

I don't think brother Phet was looking for a "Mad Planets" look... but rather just a bitchen "space" scene for his "window"...

PS: That looks freakin' AWESOME... absolutely AWESOME.

What about making the astronauts smaller? The astronauts are a critical component of the game.

Do you have a Mad Planets now? I either missed that or forgot about it if you did.

I don't care about the significance of the astronauts to the game, this is a wall mural that is inspired by the game's flyer. Nothing more. I want it to look cool visually, but not necessarily be a photocopy of the flyer. Get it? No I don't have a Mad Planets.

Thanks man. I think I need to wire in a dimmer in the Outer Limits, as the main lighting is too bright for the metallic paints I am using. The reflections it causes in the ship and the spiral galaxy tend to kinda wash out the effect and makes it hard to know what you are looking at. It looks awesome with just the arcade marquees lit, so I assume being able to control the light intensity of the room fixture will help tremendously.

Um, okay.

Got a little further on this. Not sure how far I wanna take it, as I really just want it to be done for now. I may clean up the edges a little, put in a dimmer to control the lighting in this room, finish masking and painting the rest of the space arches and then call it good. I plan on adding at least 3 more planets to the mural, but I'll do that as I have the time and the willpower to do so. This shows the various stages of light/darkness:

I wanna be able to set the dimmer somewhere between 2 and 3.

I don't know how I missed this thread when you first started it.

I'll say it again, like I said it in your other thread:

Fantastic work!

seeing this really gets me motivated to go ahead and paint some custom murals on my walls.

Thanks man. Yeah, it's only paint. Worse case, you paint over it. Never know how it will turn out til you try.

Can't remember or not if you said, but how many hours do you think you put into it to get to this point? (Not the border, just the mural).

Total time so far? Less than 2 hours of real time. Most of it stepping back to stare and see what needed tweaking. I still have some planets, a space ship and a few other elements to add, but I'll do those as I feel inspired. I also need to add a few industrial elements to the underside of the MP ship. I'm not going to do all the detail that's on the ship in the flyer, as it looks too busy for me and half of the add-ons seem to be just that, they don't look well integrated into the ship's hull at all. I like the clean sleek look of mine better. I am using a small varnish brush and Plaid craft paints. I have about 30 colors in a shoe box. They come in small plastic bottles about $1 a piece at Walmart.

2 hours? Jeez. That's some talent.

I agree with the underside of the ship. The smoother look reminds me more of a stardestroyer from Star Wars.

That's exactly what I thought of when I backed away after I finished it. In fact, I went and watched Star Wars that night. Kids wouldn't let me finish the movie, but I did see the similarity in the opening scene. I really want to add the ship from the Asteroids side art to the lower right of the MP ship. I think it would be cool to integrate a few arcade space ships into this mural.

Well I finally got a few moments to revisit this project. I had gotten a full set of black light paint for Christmas, so I decided to start highlighting some details and experimenting with it. I had added some yellowish BL paint to the vortex/galaxy arms, but I wanted to light up the laser blast, the afterburners and the planet exploding. I think it worked out well:

I like it. Well done!

Thanks, I really like the depth that the BL paint gives it. You can see that with the flash, the mural instantly flattens and the illusion of space is diminished if not totally lost:

Then when the lights are down, the blacklight and phosphorescent paint makes it feel like you are looking into space, rather than at a drawing of it:

Fucking awesome dude, that is awesome. What did you start with? How did you go about that?

Well Jow, I started with a blank wall and offered some 'favors' to a college kid to come in here and paint it when he wasn't drunk or drinking. LOLSMOCALMOA
