My new to me LW3 has a row of lights out. On the board the transistor has been removed. Looks like I need a tip102 or tip122 resistor. I can solder but haven't attempted board repair yet. Can I just solder a new transistor on the board and see what happens? My concern is that someone just removed the transistor without replacing it so that makes me think something else is wrong. Maybe a short in the line? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How about a maybe?

Check the light driver board - I'll bet you have a problem on one side of the board with a damaged (burned) connector.

Why would you think this transistor is driving the lights, or is missing? Do you have a diagram?

Before you replace it, check the connections with an ohmmeter, and make sure you aren't going to have the output of the transistor dead shorted to ground, or the smoke will just come out again.

If you don't know how to do that, GET HELP. Otherwise, you're guessing, and things can get worse (more expensive) fast.

I did have a burned GI connector which is fixed. I replaced the light driver board with a brand new Rottendog board. I have the manual and schematics and all the lights that are out are on the same row and the manual lists Q74 as the position of the transistor for this row. Q74 transistor is missing so it all makes sense, I just wonder why it was removed to begin with. I attached a pic of the board.
