I have some confusion here about these products.

It seems that I have seen several threads essentially saying the variants of these products with surface mounted components (like the LV2000) are essentially junk.
I've seen quite a few people saying they have a pile of these boards that have smoked.

There seem to be 2 other designs with through hole components:
one available from @Charles Kline (are these called LV2021?)

and one from Arcade Parts and Repair here:

I was thinking about installing one on my Star Wars I've had for decades, even though I hate fixing things that aren't broken.
I went ahead and bought the one from Arcade Parts and Repair recently because it seemed easier to assemble with fewer components.

My question is: Why would anyone buy an LV2000? Am I missing something?
